Is it possible to
a) save files from cd as mp3 rather than wma
b) if in wma, can they be converted without a program
c) once in mp3, can they be burned using normal program to cd to play

a) Yeah. Just download a program that can encode MP3s. iTunes is a good one.

b) You would need a program that can convert to/from WMA. Generally, you should never put anything into WMA format, because it is a very non-standard format.

c) iTunes, and many other similar programs, can do this as well.

iTunes is definitely easy, but its MP3 encoder is pretty poor. CDex, another ripping program, comes with the LAME MP3 Encoder, which is pretty much the best. (bitrate >= 128)

Why in the bloody hell are you using Windows Media format?

I prefer the Vorbis format, part of the Ogg family. http://vorbis.com/

itunes-you wont appreciate the poorness of quality of its MP3 encoder.

also, most 'devices' today can read MP3, though not all.

General update for everyone who commented---
I was asking for Dr. Lopez actually, and i ended up figuring out some of these questions by messing around. his main problem was that he had copied songs off of cd onto his computer in wma and wanted them put into mp3 and then burned to disc.
I found a free trial program online to convert the music into mp3, and i think everything went fine from there...

thanks everyone who commented!
