For akinarei.

Mai, for once, was the first person into the office. She turned on a few lights, pulled the vacuum out of the closet and chased away the imaginary dust bunnies. She opened the blinds, turned on the coffee pot and curled up on the couch with a mug of tea. The sun had barely started to come up, but she had woken up early because of nightmares.

She startled, hearing something moving in one of the closed offices. She listened hard, heart pounding in her chest. It had come from Lin-san’s office. She got up, mug of tea clenched tightly in her hand. The door opened under her hand, and she peered around the edge of the door.

The office was dark; Lin-san slumped over his desk. Mai crept closer, seeing the slow rise and fall of the man’s shoulders. Next to him his computer was on, an eerie light cast on the man’s skin. Hesitantly, she reached out, fingers brushing through the dark, silken strands of his hair. Lin-san made a soft sound, Mai jerking her hand back automatically.

"What time is it, Taniyama-san?" Lin’s voice was rough, and low. Mai’s heart skipped a beat when he raised his head. His eyes were dark and sleepy, half lidded.

"Early." It took Mai a few tries to speak. "Before we’re supposed to be open."

Lin’s fingers wrapped around her wrist, "Why are you here so early Taniyama-san?"

"I had a dream." Mai couldn’t focus on anything in particular, especially when Lin-san’s thumb smoothed over the inside of her wrist. "A really lucid nightmare."

"Do you feel as though it’s attached to a current case?"

"I don’t- don’t think so…" Mai said. Lin-san was rubbing at her hand, his warm fingers easing tension from her hand, and pressing just right to cause her to relax somewhat.

"Then it’s just a dream." His voice was low, and even, almost hypnotic. She felt herself falling into the cadence of his words as Lin-san continued to speak to her. "You’re safe here, with me and awake." As soon as he let go of her the magic was broken. Mai found herself sinking down into the chair opposite his desk, flushed, and feeling as though she had just woken up from a deep sleep.

"I’ll make us fresh tea." Lin-san got up from behind the desk. He touched her again, fingers trailing along her shoulders, and neck, grip gentle as he lifted her chin. "Next time, Taniyama-san, don’t have nightmares for weeks before coming for help." His mouth closed over hers in a gentle kiss, melting the final unpleasant thoughts from her mind as she gave in to the kiss, and the pleasure he offered.
