Let me be the first to break the news, as I'm watching the press conference live right now. Bill Gates is stepping down from Microsoft two years from today to spend his full energies on the Gates Foundation. Ray Ozzie takes over as Chief Software Architect

Ozzie invented Lotus Notes, Symphony, Tk!solver etc... and did some of the early client/server OS stuff at Data General, way back when. He really "gets" the 'NET
If anyone around has a chance at filling Gates shoes, he can. With him at the helm as Chief Tech, Microsoft definitely has a chance at surviving the next decade or so...

The thing I don't get is this: Billy G. is really really driven. I mean he really lives, eats, and breathes the Tech. I cannot imagine him
"stepping-down" or retiring or anything. I think it would kill him, honestly!

I can't imagine him retiring generally, but switching to focus on philanthropy seems natural. Now, if we could get him to put a few million towards scholastic bridge programs...
