'nother week of work at the happiest place on earth behind me. Among other things...
I finished Mushishi this past week- I think the anime started off a lot better because they had more material to draw from. They saw where it was going and took the tone from that. And the color/movement works for this series like whoa. But the last three volumes still had a meaningful impact on me. It's been a long, strange trip reading that incredible series these past 4 years and I can't wait to see what Urushibara does next.
And the next thing in the stack of mine was the final volumes of Naoki Urasawa's Pluto. For those that don't know, Pluto is Urasawa's retelling of a story arc from Astro Boy, "The Greatest Robot on Earth". I haven't read the original, but this series stands on its own masterfully. If you're a fan of themes such as questions what it is to be human, politics on a global scale and espionage, this bud's for you.
Weekend was pretty damn awesome.
came over Friday and we started on Justified, but she was mainly over for the return of Fringe and amazing guest star Christopher Lloyd. I can't say enough about how wonderful this episode was- if the latest ratings are anything to go by, the show's still got a fighting chance of staying on the air. I implore you, folks, if you're not already watching, check this beautiful mess out. I guarantee, if you're a sci-fi fan? This is one of the best damn things airing today, even if you've never watched an episode- and it needs all the help it can get.
cacophonyblood came over Saturday afternoon. Showed her the first Eva movie, which would be random of me normally, but we then headed over to the city to meet up with Izzy,
lichifruit,
edcool1 and even
nightfeathers (who I hadn't seen it quite some time) to catch Evangelion 2.0. My third time, but first with a big crowd. And there is nothing like seeing a film as powerful as that in a room full of like-minded folks.
After that, Jess and I headed over to the Marines' Memorial Theater for the Thrilling Adventure Hour- a radio play/podcast featuring at least two dozen talented comedians- among them, John DiMaggio, James Urbaniak, Paul F. Tompkins, Donal Logue, Neil Patrick Harris and Alison Brie- doing hilarious skits and bits for the amusement of all. We returned to the home to catch the kick-ass first episode of the new Spartacus series before she had to head out. Damn good night.
And on Sunday, my parents and bro surprised me on multiple fronts- first by returning from their ski trip early and second by bringing back Sean's beau with them. We headed out late in the AM, picking up my best bud's bro Zander on the way and hitting the city around 1 for some amazing dim sum. We dropped Sean and Hanna off at the airport and then headed back home, where Zander and I hooked up later to watch The Machinist. Dark, atmospheric film about a tortured soul. The music was deeply evocative and it makes for a tone most horror films wish they could aspire to. Check this one out if you get a chance, it's a trip.
Tomorrow brings a screening of The Mechanic after work and this weekend brings my first company party at Pixar.
