Europe always seems so full of places full of that people took time and effort to craft as if they were works of art.

Well, on the other hand all that glamour and time was usually gained by using taxes from poor folk - we didn't have a middle class for the longest of times - and pressing money from the New World countries and colonies and just spending them on looking glamorous, a la Louis XIV., etc.

And considering that some of these buildings took decades to be finished I rather doubt the work would be affordable these days.

What I'm basically trying to say - it's not all just honest work going on there, even though the end result is beautiful (if people pay the money to keep it up).
