Gaueko took Anushka out to the carnival, where they were quietly needling Tez when Johnny, Zann, and Genny ran across them. And it was just quiet needling until Anushka--demonstrating a lack of awareness of personal space that is truly distressing in one with her powers--answered Tez's question about what she was in the most direct way possible.
And Tez retaliated.
And Gaueko took that personally.
And then the Saturday night midway of the Carnavale Diabolique went straight to hell, with Tez and Gaueko putting all their godly might to tearing each other apart.

Suddenly it feels like the ground's ten thousand feet away, pulling me down hard and fast, down away from the stars they're both stars and I'm dropping out from under Tez with my face in the mud, curled into a little heap, pawing slush and dirt from my eyes. Least he's not falling on me. Least he's standing--
--what the hell, his foot, where he doesn't have one--it's shining, black as stars, I can see it from the corner of my eye, and I'm right there and all of us are in the gutters but some of us are looking at the stars and reach out to touch it, and it's like black ice and glass and all the dark spaces--
