Day 57
Midnight
I didn’t sleep much last night, as usual I was up late and only a couple hours must have gone by before I woke hearing a terrifying sound come from the park. At first I thought maybe something may have gotten hold of a rabbit, but then the waves of pain and hate and hunger came. And then I knew what was out there, what caused it. The same creature who wore my face in the tavern, the thing from the tower, and the pain was human. Even when I felt it leave, I did not go out there afraid it might come back. I didn’t fall back to sleep until the sun came up.
It was early evening when I finally woke, first thing I did was go down to the park. The trail of energy had almost faded during the day, but it led me to a spot where the ground was soaked in blood and pain. Tears sting my eyes as I leave the park, not knowing who or what that thing killed and its gone. Maybe I was wrong and maybe it was only an animal, gods please let it just have been an animal. I couldn’t go back home, I just want to be around people, let them drown it out, that sound and the pain. I stop by the sheriffs to see if something was reported already, someone missing, something found, but the office is closed. I pause outside trying to decide what to do next, I look around and notice a beautiful older woman, all dressed in black, escorted by a tall but bent male companion who is holding a parasol. I smile for a moment, seeing her lively and animated gestures as she speaks to him and he says nothing back. They are further down the street but even from here I can see she has a zest for life that few possess, definitely not local.
I decide to go into the Café and just sit and watch everything going on, letting the energy of everyone there wash over me until I can think clearly again and figure out what to do. I don’t even realize how much time has passed until I look out the window and see that the moon is already reached its highest point in the sky. After last night I had no intention of being out this late and the place is empty, wonderful. I leave the Café, my mind fixed on quickly getting home. Then I feel it, darkness and terror from the alley beside the building, but by then it’s too late.
