Follow Me Boy
Evening of Day Twenty-Six

The casket stands are finished--Kora's twelve inches taller than Cary's--and the caskets lie on them in the dining room. Cary has a few notes and trinkets around him. Kora has more, including a baby dress and tiny shoes that used to be Fiona's. She helped me pick them out and placed them there herself. For Kora's baby. I spent a few moments with them alone to say goodbye, then went to check on the yard while Maryk had his time with them. Everyone else in the house will see them with the public.

Lena has the yard looking immaculate and the tables are set up again with food and drink. If not for the black lace everywhere, it would look like a happy party instead of a wake. I pause on the back porch and straighten my dress, tugging slightly on the neckline. I really do dislike this dress, but it is the most appropriate for mourning. My eyes drift upward to the windows of my building and I note that every curtain has been replaced with black ones, as per my instructions. It's the same on the front of the house. Let no one say we do not mourn properly here.

A sigh escapes from my lips as I drape the veil over my face and move back toward the dining room. Maryk should be done by now, and the guests should be arriving soon. As I enter, I see Maryk standing at the far side of the room between the bodies, his head bowed slightly. I clear my throat gently as I come up behind him and touch his shoulder.
