Bit of an explanation: I saw a Polish film called Kanal today, a 1950s rendition of the Warsaw Uprising during World War II. I've been to Warsaw -- sort of -- and I understand now why there's nothing old there, why there's nothing left, and why all the buildings are the drab cement of Soviet architecture ( Read more... )

very nice poem. :) WW2 had a lot of stories to tell. Another tragedy of the Warsaw Uprising was how the Soviets slowed their offensive to purposely give the Germans time to clear out the uprising (all post-war political planning). Crazy.

Well, and also that from the Soviet perspective, if they had helped the Poles, they would have had to cede some of the liberator's laurels to them. But, that aside, it was a horrible, confused attempt at fighting for something and then realizing there wasn't anything left to fight for. Things like that particularly tug at me, I think -- tragedies that could have been avoided.

Thank you muchly for the comment. It's quite curious how much about WWII that's somewhat common knowledge I hadn't know before. One reason it's good to be a history major, I guess! I'm getting a palpable sense of the world.
