I have never tried Mandriva. My desktop runs Ubuntu and it seems to work pretty well. It's pretty user-friendly, too. (For example, when I plug in my digital camera, it offers to automatically download the pictures.
Have any problems with drivers? I'm planning on putting it on a Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop, and an old Gateway desktop. Typical Lexmark inkjet printer and Epson scanner as peripherals.
I tried both out via Live CD, and it was able to connect well to my wireless modem. Except, for some reason Mandriva gave the signal strength as a 2 (out of ten) whereas Ubuntu gave it an 8.
