I'm glad that today is almost over, because it ended up being a total cluster fuck at work. I showed up on time at 5:45 am, only to find that they had known since 4:30 that my flight was delayed for SIX HOURS. It clearly states in our contract that they should have called me, but they didn't. I sat in the crew room for 6.5 hours before they ( Read more... )

*gives you a hug* I'm sorry your new job isn't treating you right. =/ Sounds like that scheduling manager is an idiot.

Maybe next time if you take a cruise you can go with your husband instead. I'm sure that would be much more fun. =)

I hope things get better for you. You deserve happiness.

I absolutely love Anna Karenina. But I'm also completely addicted to long tragic 19th century literature, so you have to take my opinion with a salt shaker. I read the newer Opra endorsed translation, but I haven't examined the older, so I can't offer an opinion as to whether it's a marked improvement.

Sorry life is lame. Revolt!

I've read 3/4 of Anna Karenina. I stopped early because school started and etc. etc. (That is to say, not because the book was awful.)

However, I don't think it'd be the best thing for you to read right now. It's a far cry from Marquez and it's very much a 19th century romance. I think the most interesting character by far is Konstantin Levin who (I would argue as a Russianist) can only be fully appreciated if you know a little bit about the intellectual environment in late 19th century Russia.

I do notice that it is "#1 in the Top Top Ten List of 125 authors Top Ten books" according to wikipedia... I recommend distancing yourself from Love in the Time of Cholera before getting to Anna Karenina.

Do you like Thomas Hardy at all? Tess of the D'Urbervilles might be a good segue into Anna.

I'll look into Hardy- I haven't read that. And how might one find out about the intellectual environment in late 19th century Russia? That's part of my problem- I feel like I'm going into this book without some necessary information.

I'm so glad you enjoyed Love in the Time of Cholera. I cherish it as one of the best.

I finished A Handmaid's Tale before I left for California last week. Thanks for recommending it! I'm currently reading The Glass Castle, a very interesting memoir.
