In the words of ben gibbard,

"...I need you so much closer..."

it's sometimes how amazing such a simple line can be so powerful. granted, read on some random blog by itself it can hardly mean anything, but in the context of the song and the sweeping melodies you can definately feel it's punch.

I totally relate, re lyrics.

I aspire to write lyrics like Bono. To me, he is one of the greatest lyricists of all time.

But I have found that I've begun to write so much better since I decided to stop trying so hard. It just came to the point where I felt God shouting Write it, already! So I've been more relaxed, and I can see my lyrics getting better and better.

you will get no arguements out of me. Bono is definately the man. That whole frakin' band is one of the greatest of all time.

I also agree with you on the stoping trying so hard. I definately write better lyrics when they just come, at those moments. My only sadness is they don't happen so much as i wish they did. I wonder if that takes practice too...

I discovered (not invented) a good rule of thumb when writing lyrics, or doing anything creative:

DON'T wait for inspiration. DON'T wait for it to be perfect.

When you wait for the right moment, it rarely comes and you are completely subject to your moods. But when you decide to do it regardless of the mood, your talents soon follow suit.

What you think is perfect now might be junk to you later. Getting it "perfect" now is wasting time and energy. Do it now. If you like it 30 days from now, then good. If you don't like it 30 days from now, then change it. The song doesn't own you, you do what you want with it.

That's what works for me, anyway. :)
