I'm looking at the boy on the right side, middle vertically and the girl on the bottom left and I'm really amazed at how universal some emotions are. Did you tell these kids to pose in any way, or did they do this on their own?
By the way, I like this picture both in content and in composition. The orangy-brown earth is a good color match with the blue clothing.
The kids just posed how they wanted to. They liked making funny faces and especially liked seeing what they looked like in the picturse after I took them. As far as composition goes, I was just try to take the picture quickly so they wouldn't all mob me but I think it came out pretty well too.
Yeah, we have two African American girls on our program and wherever we go black South Africans come up and start speaking to them really quickly in Xhosa because they don't ever think of black people being native english speakers. It's different when you're here and can actually experience the language and culture and such. We're quite a ways from Georgia. Plus if we were in Atlanta I wouldn't spend nearly as much on postage.
I also keep expecting the South Africans to look all exotic and stuff. Instead, they just kind of look like African-American people. Wait a second! African-American, minus the American ... African? Black people are ethnically similar to Africans? Boggles the mind.
No seriously. I keep wondering if you really just moved down to Atlanta, Georgia instead of South Africa in a desperate ploy to avoid me. A very elaborate ruse, but at least under that scenario I wouldn't have to realize that black people came from Africa.
That little girl was seriously adorable. I have to say though, my favorite kid was the one with the green shirt in the very front. His name is Bojoza and he was adorable and hilarious. I'll try to find a better picture of him to post later. His mother had died and his grandmother was raising him but he had this amazingly happy disposition. The whole community supported him with food and clothing and everything and he called all the women Mama (which isn't acually all that different from most of the kids here). In fact, I have at least 3 Mama's now.
i love that picture!snapdragon33October 14 2005, 20:36:58 UTC
especially that kid on the right in the front with the blue jacket holding his hood up. oh my god, the description of those kids and mobbing cameras is just like my first graders
