Yeah, backpack shopping is frustrating. I was looking for nice pockets and side/front access to the main compartment--and then didn't get it because the Osprey Luna fit better than the Gregory Deva. It sounds like you're looking at slightly bigger packs (and the Electra is bigger than the other two)...but all three you listed sound like good brands and are probably great packs, and really once you're using it you aren't going to care whether there's a pocket here or a little extra space there if your shoulders are sore and your hips are bruised. Your probation idea sounds good--if it feels comfortable, great, and if you have any doubts either go back to the store or go to another store, load up some packs and really adjust them (including bending the stays on the Luna that give it that ridiculous curved shape).
