He doesn't so much hear it as he does feel it, even as he's sitting there, half asleep.
But whether it's felt or heard, it wakes David up enough that he blinks, rubs at his eyes, and slides up the wall with a yawn to stumble forward blearily, to lean on the door.
"Nick..."
The handle turns easily under his grip, and he opens the door just enough, sliding through and closing it behind him, to then lean against the wall, to just watch Nick where he lies for a moment.
There's no damage to the room at large, though things have obviously been moved around haphazardly... or by a psychic too frazzled to control himself. Nothing, however, is broken.
He sleeps almost peacefully there, flat on his stomach. Unresponsive. Dead to the world.
The response is like a jab to the throat, and just as sudden. He startles awake, always the lightest of sleepers when it came to those senses he'd had long before his rebirth, and he scrambles for a moment before glaring at David.

There was so much to apologise for. And no way he'd ever be able to apologise for it all.
He closes his eyes, trying to feel out the edges of Nick's consciousness as he sleeps, to see if he can talk to him as he sleeps.
Nick? It's me.
