The adults would have looked at you with the same warmth in their eyes that they gave the others and your mother wouldn't have cried as much. If things had been different you would have stayed in Nibelheim.
If things had been different you would have passed the SOLDIER exams. You would have sent your mother a letter for the first time since you arrived in Midgar, telling her to be proud. Mayhap the Nibelheim mission still would have gone the way it did, but you wouldn't have been there due to Zack's pity. You would have found out what happened later and gone back to search for, to find Zack, and you would have broken him out. If things had been different he wouldn't have died for you.
If things had been different you wouldn't have remembered. You wouldn't have filled the holes in your head only to have new and bigger holes in your heart. The life you have now wouldn't belong to someone else. And the guilt you drown in wouldn't be a sea full of air. If things had been different you would have been you.
He stares out the window wistfully and thinks, 'If things had been different...' But they aren't so his silent sigh is carried by the wind out to sea and he turns around to look at the simmering fire.
