The Umpteenth Prospect

Opening the door with my spare keys I was greeted by fake smiles and their enthusiasm unnerved me a bit. Usually, I get the “we didn’t even noticed you enter” treatment. I rushed to freshen myself. When I came back to serve myself dinner, I became aware that they were nudging each other. One look in their direction and I knew the subject matter.

I can't imagine having to deal with an arranged marriage. Do you want to find someone yourself, and if you tell your parents that will they be upset? I wish you luck in dealing with this situation.

"Do you want to find someone yourself, and if you tell your parents that will they be upset? "
Actually my parents just wanted me to get married coz I was crossing thirty. The problem was there was no man in sight. And eventually, I did find a guy of my liking (a school mate whom I re-connected via FB and we kinda clicked) and married him with both our parents blessing. They were more relieved than upset :)

Whew! An unfamiliar setup but with all the familiar family stresses. Such a great unexpected fit for the prompt, too. I enjoyed this very much, and I'm glad this frustration is a thing of the past for you now.

I would passive/aggresively rebel the same way you did! Thank you for the glimpse into Indian culture. It's fascinating. Hugs and peace~~~

My friend Sunil grew up in the US and still had his parents setting him up to meet with "this nice girl, we know her parents, she reads a lot too". It's so very different, and yet family meddling is everywhere.

I was 40 when I got married and I think everyone had mostly given up, so I didn't have too much 'help' to deal with, luckily.

Ah! Yes the gentle prodding and trying to hook you up with someone at parties/wedding is a norm here too. I guess everyone experiences it in some way.

Lucky you! It becomes tiring after a while since you know their intentions are good but they are not getting your perspective.

"Arranged marriage" seems to mean "arranged bad date," at least if the participants can say "no!" The pressure for the right kind of marriage must be intense.

Yeah, pretty much. Looking back it feels funny but when you are going through it, you feel like backing your stuff and running off.

Good to see you here <3
