I believe I wrote this the day when the war between Iraq and the US was just beginning to take hold... There was no 9-11 at the time, and I was still thinking, we'll just all blow one another up. I think I was more looking towards the negative side of things than I am now. Still, it feels like there has been much unrest within the world without ( Read more... )

People blindly following religion without question, and religion has therefore been used as a form of government policy.

I liked this statement best (although, there were a lot of good things said in this). My largest rant about 9/11 was how afterwards people began to follow a blind commercial patriotism, and if you didn't agree with what Bush was doing then obviously you weren't American. Religion was used in government to enact a plethora of unfair legislation and call to arms, and now the blind patriotism it's inspired has created something close to a totalitarian state - exactly what we have been fighting Iraq for ending.

People need to wake up to the fact that they do have a choice, voice, and a say in things. That they dont' need to sit idly by, and accept what is done to them because then these masses of blind following are created and then it becomes too late to change things.

Totalitarian state, you don't say. I was writting a story about a totalitarian state at about this time, reading reading Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged and Anthem, plus writing about the fuction and values of a totalitarian state, and where the values in the system may lie.
Right now I'm just listening to the Sugar Cubes and avoiding my assignment to create a paper on two great topics of history and human rights... I just hate finding the words to best open up an introductory statement. I really like that film Amelie however. I forget when that film came out on video, but none of my friends really cared for it like I did at the time; will actually, they just didn't like it.

Sometimes I think discussing these issues is pointless...we human beings are too perverted for our own good because whenever we have half the chance, we find that the most motivating, powerful forces to drive us are fear, distrust and hatred, rather than tolerance, co-operation and love...

1984, Brave New World, Catch 22, recent history...think over them all you want we land up at square one...it's like playing snakes and ladders with too many snakes...

[hell, I'm just being too much of a pessimist...]but what's important is DISCUSSION. Which is the only thing that can spread enough awareness to make a difference. More power to words!

Amelie...BEAUTIFUL movie. Love everything about it. It's exquisite.

And yes, William Blake...see quite a bit of him here...lovely poetry, most of it. Rather disturbing and brilliant paintings too...

Oh yes, you can tell I'm a fan of one of the greatest iconoclastic poets of the Romantic era of art.
I would like to recommend Ann Radcliffe has one of the greatest writers, and perhaps poets, that wrote during the gothic era. Sylvia plath and T.S. Eliot are perhaps some of my favorite more modern writers.
Although this has nothing to do with poetry so much, I gotta recommend that book Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris, best comedy book I ever remember reading. In fact, it’s a great holiday seasons book :)

I think Socrates's guiding rule sums it all up "Know Thyself".

When has there ever been a war where one side didn't think themselves to be the sole supporter of what is righteous and truthful? War and politics is complicated enough without religion added to the mix.

very good point. Most people believe there can only be one set of right and wrong answers. Some people believe that values they believe in are necessary and important to everyone equally within all societies. It's almost seems odd that much of the world is actually quite ethnocentric even today...
