If it were a matter of laziness or if they didn't knw how to upload images I'd just do it for them if that's what it takes for them to stop hotlinking!!

Yes. Though it's strange, I never thought it is easier, at least for userpics, to put your file name than to save it to computer and take it from there.

It's when they snag the link which the image was post with and repost it somewhere else, so they end up taking up more bandwidth from the original user's account. (it took me a while to actually figure out how it works too, thank god I hadn't been doing it before though!! u_u)
