OTHER HISTORY: Conrart hardly ever talks about himself, so this is going to be long. Conrart is the son of Cecilie von Spitzberg, the previous Demon Queen of Shin Makoku, and Dunheely Weller, a human swordsman - in other words, he’s only half demon. He chose on his sixteenth birthday to live as a demon, despite the discrimination faced by half-humans. Rejected by most of his peers (and his younger brother Wolfram), Conrart’s main source of companionship was thus his friend (and eventual subordinate) Josak, and the noble Lady Suzannah Julia von Wincott.

Unfortunately for Shin Makoku in general, Queen Cecilie was not a terribly good queen, and left much of the administration to her brother, Stoffel. He, in some mixture of incompetence and malice, succeeded in provoking a bloody war with neighbouring human countries. Distrust of half-humans reached an all-time high, aided by rumours of treachery, and Conrart was ultimately ordered to lead a half-human troop of soldiers to cut off the human armies at Lütenberg. Before Conrart left for Lütenberg, he was given a protective amulet by Suzannah Julia.

Lütenberg was a suicide mission in all but name. Conrart’s troops were a barely trained militia, and they had little armour and no medical team. Conrart and Josak were the only survivors. The sheer bloodiness of the battle shocked both sides into an uneasy ceasefire, and for his heroism, Conrart earned the nickname ‘the Lion of Lütenberg’. The honour of half-humans was symbolically restored, at least somewhat, but Conrart himself was left devastated. The trauma of the battle was compounded by that while he had been gone, Suzannah Julia had died. Furthermore, it had been decided that her soul would become the next Demon King - and Conrart was charged with delivering it to its new vessel.

To this end, Conrart, bottle-bound soul in hand, was transported from his world into our world (20th century Earth) to deliver the soul. With the help of an operative of Earth’s Demon King, he delivered the soul to its future father, Shibuya Shouma - and was promptly scolded for his grim, withdrawn attitude, and told that if he remained that way, Shouma wouldn’t allow his child to go to Shin Makoku. Conrart was stunned - but after living in the human world and having several more ‘chance’ run-ins with the Shibuyas, he began to change. He returned to Shin Makoku shortly after Suzannah Julia’s soul was reborn as Shibuya Yuuri.

When Yuuri arrived in Shin Makoku fifteen years later, Conrart was the first of his retainers he met. The two formed a strong bond, which survived even Conrart’s faked ‘betrayal’ of Shin Makoku. Conrart has dedicated his life to serving and protecting Yuuri, but also to being his friend and confidante.

PERSONALITY: Kind and gentle to his allies, and a fierce opponent to his enemies. Conrart is deeply loyal to his king and country - even at a time when his country was not so loyal to him. He is also extremely patient, enduring his younger brother’s insults in the hope that their relationship can someday recover. He seems to have taken Shibuya Shouma’s advice to heart, and appears almost perpetually peaceful and happy, smiling often.

However, just as others hide problems behind glares and frowns, Conrart hides his behind his smiles. He very rarely, if ever admits when something is troubling him, never admits to needing help, and is all too willing to sacrifice himself (figuratively and literally) to further Yuuri’s goals. He still feels intense guilt about the death of his men at the Battle of Lütenberg, and is much more affected than he lets on about his damaged relationship with Wolfram, and the hardships he’s faced as a half-human. He does whatever is asked of him, no matter how upsetting or all-out suicidal it may be. (I should probably note that this loyalty probably won’t extend to Shade, though - rather, Conrart will act in whatever manner he believes Yuuri would feel just.)

His greatest flaw, though, is identified by Yuuri early on in the series - he has a truly awful sense of humour.

ABILITIES:
* Excellent swordsman
* Highly adaptable in combat
* Good at charming information out of people
* Horrible sense of humour
