here. The following is a super condensed synopsis.
One day in her early childhood, Mayu was playing with her younger twin, Mio, along a steep mountain path. Mio, running ahead, teased Mayu for being slow and joked about leaving her behind if she didn't hurry up. Not wanting to be left behind, Mayu still gave chase, eventually slipping and falling off the path. The accident crippled Mayu for life, leaving her with a bad right leg. (Playing through a certain part of Fatal Frame II reveals that Mayu fell on purpose.)
A short time after the accident, Mio, Mayu, and their mother, Shizu, moved away. Perhaps the reason for the move was their father "passing away"; in truth, he went missing in the forest and was spirited away to a haunted place called the Lost Village, but Shizu never told her daughters of this.
Years later, when the twins were fifteen, Shizu became very ill and had to be hospitalized. Mio and Mayu were sent to live with their uncle, Kei Amakura. Within the same year Mio and Mayu returned to their first hometown when they heard a dam would be built over their old childhood play area. While there, a crimson butterfly caught Mayu's attention, leading her and Mio through the forest to the Lost Village.
In the village Mayu encountered many horrors as she and her sister searched for a way out, their original path obscured and lost forever. Early on Mayu became possessed by the ghost of Sae Kurosawa, a former twin whose sacrificial ritual failed and whose sister, Yae, had apparently abandoned her. Sae's ghost takes control of Mayu's body numerous times, separating the two as they try to escape. As Sae's influence over Mayu increased, she became more hostile towards Mio, chasing her down, asking "Yae" why she left or for her to complete the ritual by killing Sae (which would kill Mayu in the process).
Towards the end of the game Mayu is kidnapped by villager ghosts and taken back to Kurosawa House in order to perform the destined Crimson Sacrifice Ritual. The twins are reunited in the Hellish Abyss, and by performing the ritual Mayu is killed (along with Sae). Her body is thrown into the Abyss, her spirit reemerging in the form of a crimson butterfly. Before reuniting with the other butterflies of the village and flying away, her last words to Mio are "thank you".
Personality: When she was alive, Mayu was a reserved, shy, and thoughtful young girl. She didn't like to draw much attention to herself, so she was very soft-spoken and tended to keep most thoughts to herself rather than voicing them aloud. Intuitive, she would catch sight of things that would sometimes go unnoticed by others; sometimes she would brush it off or pretend she never saw anything (“Mio... Um, nevermind...”).
Mayu was very attached to her younger twin sister, Mio, even more so after her crippling childhood accident. Physically weak, she depended on Mio a lot throughout Fatal Frame II, often falling far behind while running away from ghosts (and getting frequently attacked by them in the process). Mayu’s biggest fear was being separated from Mio, resulting in their shared promise of being “together forever”.
Mayu's love and loyalty were complex. From simple things like slowing down while walking to the grave Crimson Sacrifice Ritual, Mayu used Mio's guilt over her childhood accident to make her sister do whatever she wanted. Though loving, she was still selfish. Mayu was surreptitiously manipulative, doing anything necessary to keep Mio's attention all to herself. A part of Mayu was secretly overjoyed whenever she felt her leg aching because it meant Mio would pay her extra attention and care.
With a spiritual form that lacks expression through voice and body language half of the time, it can be difficult to gauge Mayu's true intentions. If someone catches sight of a crimson butterfly down the hall or by a doorway, chances are it's trying to help out by revealing the unseen or guiding the lost.
Biggest Fear: When alive, Mayu's greatest fear was of being alone (and more specifically, being separated from her twin sister, Mio). The mere thought of being left behind would always cause the girl much distress and desperation to prevent it. Since her transformation into a crimson butterfly, Mayu's fear of loneliness and separation has ebbed. She now feels complete, having "become one" with Mio through the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual, and she accepts this state of being over her mortal desire to be "together forever".
Mayu's spirit may exhibit fear or apprehension of Jigoku's more malevolent beings - a remnant of her other mortal fears of the supernatural.
If someone attemps to strangle Mayu, or should something similar be within the girl's view, she may display either sadness, discomfort, or agitation.
Powers: Mayu had a sixth sense that served to be both an asset and a liability - high sensitivity and high vulnerability went hand in hand. As a crimson butterfly, that sixth sense has carried over. She still has impressive intuition and is still vulnerable to spirits that would do her harm (but to a lesser degree can't die when you're already dead!). Being a ghost herself, Mayu can pass through physical barriers like walls, "teleport", and project memories (visual/audio) to people capable of picking them up. Most of the time Mayu will appear as a crimson butterfly that can act as a guide.
Should Mayu become tainted by Jigoku's environment, or other spirits that inhabit it, she would have the capacity to harm the living through strangulation (manual or simulated).

Third Person: When it sinks in, the pain is near unbearable. At one point Mayu begins to struggle against her sister's grip, gasping for air and kicking and clawing no matter how hard she tries not to. It's all right - it's Mio. If she could at the very least die by Mio's hands, everything would be all right. There's nothing to be scared about in dying like this.
But still, she kicks.
What kind of person would strangle their own twin to death? A loving one, Mayu thinks - Sae thinks. One that cares about her sister and understands their responsibility - their destiny. Mayu can still feel the fallen Shrine Maiden's voice reverberating through her body, even as her senses start to numb. The giant stone slab beneath her, initially uncomfortable and ice-cold, isn't so bad anymore. The echo of dozens of staffs being struck against the earth, each veiled priest holding them in perfect rhythm, is no longer deafening. Mio's face, focused with such trance-like, unyielding determination, doesn't make the dying girl's heart ache.
Mayu feels relief that, despite her body's last attempts to cling to life, the girl above her keeps going. Once-trembling hands wrap around her neck tighter, tighter, refusing to let go until the ritual is complete. For that, she is eternally grateful. As the darkness welcomes her with an open embrace, she's glad.
In the end, her earnest "thank you" is answered with a single cry of anguish.
First Person: Do you remember what I said, under the Old Tree? Do you remember, Mio? "No matter what happens, I'll forgive you."
You helped me, and you helped the village, so it's all right. I'm okay. I'm still here.
Don't forget. Please, don't forget.
Notes: Mayu's "default" form is the crimson butterfly. Her more human-like form can be seen on occasion, or by indirect means (i.e. reflective surface). If/when Mayu becomes "tainted", she'd be more of a somber ghost than a malicious one. She'd have the capability to harm someone, but unless worse comes to worst, she wouldn't do it.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Under typical circumstances, Mayu is aphonic. She moves her mouth as if speaking, but little to no sound comes out. Any silence/failed text/white noise/static when communicating with Mayu is represented by whited-out font. Example: What's seen here is for OOC knowledge, but isn't discernible IC.
