Canon Point: Partway through Fatal Frame III, during Hour VIII: The Vacant Dream
Setting: Spirits do exist, and they come in all shapes and sizes. The young and the old. The innocent and the malicious. Maidens sacrificed in horrid rituals gone wrong (this one sure is frequent). Only those with enough of a sixth sense are able to feel their presence, and these people are few and far between. Possession of a Camera Obscura - a rare, antique
camera capable of capturing the unseen on film - heightens a person's otherworldly abilities and puts it to the test. Highly useful, but also highly dangerous, considering where these cameras are usually found. Haunted mansions where unlucky visitors are torn limb from limb. Haunted villages that demand sacrificial twins. More haunted mansions with creepy little girls trying to hammer your feet to the floor. Haunted islands where doctors botch brain surgeries meant to treat memory loss. Fun places like that.
July, 1988, Japan. Twin sisters, the Amakuras, became trapped in a Lost Village and were haunted by the curse that kept it so. The village revolved around twins - fearing them in life, worshiping them in death. In order to free the spirits there and appease the Hellish Abyss that lied below, a twin sacrifice, killed by their other half, was required. When dawn broke one week later, only one of the Amakuras was located and rescued, unwilling to speak of the horrors she went through.
September, rainy and bleak. Within the dreams of those who regret living lies an old manor blanketed with snow. Night by night, the Remaining Amakura girl is drawn to this house, chasing after the sister who crossed to the other side without her. Living on alone holds no purpose, and so she chooses to sleep. Sleep, dream, pursue. Deeper and deeper into the manor she goes until she is no longer able to wake.
Her uncle, another Amakura, soon follows, determined to save her from a cursed fate. Feelings of guilt and abandonment drive him to dream, too. The manor of sleep and snow has cursed them both, but there are others who wish to help them. A red butterfly, or two, or several - protecting, guiding, consoling to the best of their abilities. The longer the dreams continue, the farther gone both Amakuras become. There's only so much they can do before it's too late.
Personality: (The following describes Mayu as she was when alive. Post-death changes are covered in the AU section.)
Mayu is a reserved, shy, and thoughtful young girl, noticeably more introverted when compared to her younger twin sister, Mio. When they're together, Mayu has an easier time expressing herself and coming out of her shell, though the difference isn't too drastic. She doesn't like to draw negative attention to herself, so she is very soft-spoken and tends to keep most thoughts to herself rather than voicing them aloud. Intuitive, she catches sight of things that sometimes go unnoticed by others; sometimes she brushes it off or pretends she never saw anything (“Mio... Um, nevermind...”).
She is very attached to her twin (very attached), even more so after her crippling childhood accident; it's an out of the norm bond noted by Kei in the third game. Mayu's body is frail. She has little strength and can't be as physically active as most girls her age. Forcing herself to do so much as walk at a quicker pace can cause unnecessary strain on her bad leg. Her shortcomings have forced her to heavily depend on others willing to assist her for years, Mio being the one most prevalent. Physically weak, she depends on Mio a lot throughout Fatal Frame II, often falling far behind while running away from ghosts (and getting frequently attacked by them in the process).
Weak in body, Mayu may also be considered weak in spirit. Both she and Mio have a sixth sense that makes them aware of the spiritual world. She can see and hear ghosts, and also receives
vague visions when she touches certain items or enters rooms that contain strong, lingering emotions or memories. Visions appear black and white to her, often accompanied by static-like sounds. Mayu’s sixth sense is a double-edged sword; while more powerful than Mio’s, it also makes her more vulnerable to spirits - an easy target. Mayu is also unable to defend herself when it comes to supernatural forces. Ghosts (like
Sae) can use her body as a medium against her will, as she isn't strong enough to deny them access. Back in All God's Village, the presence of malevolent spirits was almost crippling, causing Mayu to freeze up in fear, often leaving her open for an attack, or turning herself into an unwanted obstacle Mio had to move around (or in Khalil's gaming experiences, excellent bait for combo shots).
Mayu’s biggest fear is of being alone (and more specifically, being separated from Mio), resulting in their shared childhood promise of being “together forever”. The mere thought of being left behind would always cause the girl much
distress and desperation to prevent it.
To put it one way, Mayu's love and loyalty are... complex. From simple things like slowing down while walking, to the grave Crimson Sacrifice Ritual, when she was alive Mayu used Mio's guilt over her childhood accident to make her sister do whatever she wanted. Though loving, she was still selfish when it came to her sister's time and attention. Mayu was surreptitiously manipulative, doing anything necessary to keep Mio's attention all to herself. A part of Mayu was secretly overjoyed whenever she felt her leg aching (another tidbit revealed during the final fight on Hard or Nightmare mode), because it meant Mio would stay close and pay her extra care.
Abilities and Weaknesses: Standard sixth sense deal, ghost radar and otherworldly behavior. Can vanish/reappear in weird places, pass through walls and other physical objects if she wants to. Can project memories through the network (
faulty audio and/or monochrome video) or physical touch; both require a lot of effort, the latter more so. Shittiest reception comes from physical touch if the person on the receiving end has no sixth sense whatsoever.
Prone to communication problems. Incomplete text messages, flickering holograms, audio with static, things like that. (Science and the supernatural? Fuck you guys, we don't mix together!) Like other crimson butterflies from the game, Mayu is completely harmless and will never troll other characters with her ghostly ways unless RP events of epic proportions force her to. Totally easy to "kill" due to being... you know, a butterfly. You could crush her in your hand if you manage to catch her, but why would you ever want to do that?
Inventory: Nothing.
Appearance: True form is a
crimson butterfly. Easy to see in the dark because of the red glow she gives off and matching dust that sometimes trails behind her. There's a tiny chip embedded in the corner of her left wing; that's what allows her to access the network.
Her
original form (pictured right; seen only via network holograms) is a young Japanese girl. Barely stands above five feet tall, has a thin frame, a bit underweight. She "walks" with a constant limp that becomes more noticeable the faster she appears to move. In holograms the standard bracelet is attached to her left wrist.
Age: Died at 15.
OC/AU Justification ;
If AU, How is Your Version Different From Canon, and How Will That Come Across? This AU put together for Singularity explores Mayu's aftermath, which is
hinted at in FF3, but never officially stated. Did Mio kill Mayu with her own hands, or did she take the escape route and abandon her sister?
Going with the
normal ending of FF2, Mayu was strangled to death, her body tossed into the Hellish Abyss while her spirit continued to exist in the form of a butterfly, watching over All Gods Village. Everyone thinks Mayu just went missing since as Mio never spoke of the incident after being found. Kei, on the other hand, might have put two and two together after enough dream mansion exploration. She is present during the events of FF3, trying to protect and guide Mio (whose survivor's guilt pulled her into the Manor of Sleep) and Kei (as he tries to rescue his only surviving niece). Mayu isn't the only butterfly seen, so there are other sacrificed twins, like herself, trying to help out.
Since she's being played post-death, there has been some further development with Mayu's personality. Mayu's fear of loneliness and separation has ebbed, for the most part. She now feels complete, having "become one" with Mio through the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual, and she accepts (to the best of her ability) this state of being over her mortal desire to be "together forever". She said she would forgive Mio no matter what happened at the end of the game, and she has, bearing no ill will for dying at her sister's hands. She could be selfish, and her desire for her sister's attention while alive was strong, but Mayu had at least one moment of selflessness at the end of the game, offering her own life up to help Sae rest and lift the curse of the Repentance enveloping the village. As she currently stands, Mayu is at peace - or would be, if her sister would learn to move on and her uncle weren't putting himself in harm's way for her sake.
If OC, Did You Run Your Character Through a Mary-Sue Litmus Test? Not an OC, but I ran her through the test anyway.
And What Did You Score? 2 on the first test, 20 on the second

old threads to boot, just in case.)
As soon as they had stepped into the Osaka house, Mayu felt cold. It wasn’t the same cold that surrounded her while walking down the hill and into All God’s Village, limping several steps behind her twin. The cold air inside the abandoned house felt
suffocating, as if it were trying to strangle her. It was unnatural - it seeped deep down into her very bones.
She stood there, eyes wide and body shivering. The way she wouldn’t answer put Mio in a panic. “Mayu?”
They weren’t alone. This house wasn’t abandoned. There was someone here, searching, ever searching. She wasn’t going to find the same man, no. He was changed, and he was going to change her, too-
“Mayu, what’s wrong?!” Mio had touched her hand, felt what Mayu did as their sixth sense made a link. Overwhelmed, the younger twin flinched and tried to pull away, but Mayu snatched it back, holding her hand as tight as she could. She was scared the vision would drive her insane if her sister wasn’t there to ground her.
‘Where are you?’ the voices rang in her head, made her eardrums sore from the jumbled words, screaming, and laughter. ‘Masumi? Where are y- Where did you-’
The laughing wouldn’t stop. That insane, maniacal laughter, like a witch’s cackle.
‘I don’t want to kill anymore.’
Make it stop, Mio, Mayu pleaded silently, never letting go of that hand, please make it stop!
Suddenly, against Mayu's wishes, she did let go, the two of them gasping for breath and blinking hard, eyes wide open in terror. The vision had ended, but that
cold feeling had not. Mayu knew. Whatever she had seen with her sixth sense was still here.
“What was that?” There was a tremble in Mio’s voice, something she couldn’t
hide, even when she was trying to be strong for her sister. All Mayu could do was shake her head slowly and hold herself to keep from shaking.
“I don’t know… I don’t know…”
