People have this assumption that a non-profit is not a business. That is completely untrue. Whether or not they keep a profit, they still need to subsidize any and all expenses as well as pay for the things that make them a non-profit in the first place, and grants aren't available to pay for everything. And paying for staff does not mean you are for profit.

Yeah, pay as you go nights for shows are totally cool, but the crux is that it's the people running it who decide up front that that's the policy for a particular night. Everyone knows that going in and that's the arrangement.

The con is a little different. If you have a pay as you go night, it in effect costs you nothing (or very little) extra to put a butt in a seat that would otherwise be empty. At the con, it's resources -- both physical in terms of food, etc, and time in terms of managing them, and it's several hundred people. Ghosts and partygoers take up a disproportionate amount of energy and time because they tend to cause most of the problems. It sucks.

I really like your explanation :)
And on the point of test driving, if they didn't offer test driving would you sneak in when no one was looking and take a car anyways?:
I actually used something similar for days passes.
Would you ever go to a play and say "well, i can't stay the whole thing. Do you have a half a show ticket?"
Would you ever go to a club and say "well, i can't stay the whole night. Do you have an hourly cover charge?"
Would you ever go to a resturant and say "well, i',m not going to eat the whole dessert. Can I pay be the bite?"
How bout
Would you ever go to a bank and say "well, i only sleep at home half the week. Can't I just pay half my morgage?"

I can read a play, I can listen to band's recordings before I decide to attend. I rarely pay $20 for a ticket to a show. I know this doesn't really apply to me, as I really don't care for large gatherings. But, .02 anyway.

Fair enough. But if you want to use that analogy, we've developed specifically devoted to this.

I do wedding cakes for a living. You'd be SHOCKED at some of the weird questions/requests/demands we get.

MORE THAN ONCE, I've gotten the "well, if it's $__ per serving, can't I get a (large cake to serve a couple hundred), and pay $x amount? I'm only serving 50 people, so shouldn't it be 50 x (serving price), not 200 x (serving price)?"

Suuuure. Because I want to PAY YOU to do your cake. Augh.

I don't know why anyone would have a problem with paying to go to Convergence. Hubby and I were completely blown away by the value. I have NO idea how convergence provides SO much for such a small entry fee.
