A cup of sugar

Meanwhile, does anyone have any tips on how you're supposed to meet your neighbours? I'm not sure that asking to borrow a cup of sugar isn't weird in this day and age....

Ours did it by asking for our permission for an extension they wanted to build. Potentially a rocky way to introduce yourselves, and kinda useless if you don't want to build an extension.

The cup-of-sugar thing just makes me think of that episode of the Young Ones.

Don't worry about how the reaction, neighbourliness is important. I've always found middle class neighbours more polite and friendly, and Wilton's fairly middle class so I think you'll be fine.
And if you have any elderly neighbours, they'll love being talked to! - Stuart

... but not why just go across and say "hi, my name is ethel I've just moved in and thought I would come over and say hello"?

That said it took me six months to meet my current neighbour :-).

I just waited for a weekend morning, not too early, and went doorknocking on my next-door-neighbours' doors. I said hi, explained that I was new, and offered to trade phone numbers in case we needed to talk.

I managed to chat with one set, and got the other set's landlord's number to discuss the noxious weeds coming over onto our property.

They all said hi, after that, in the street.

Invite them over for a glass of wine on the deck in the afternoon sun - it would definitely win me over! :) R
