This time, about Snapper

BTW Have I ever said how much I hate Snapper? I really hate it. If I never had to use it again, that would be too soon.

Join the club.

The fares go up. The amount of outlets you can buy the snapper from is far less than you could buy 10-trips from. You have to pay $10 to even get the privilege of using the card. And, yet, the service is not improved. Pay more, get more inconvience, but get nothing in return.

It's stunning, it really is. Why is the WRC subsidising this nonesense?

Oh, and then of course if you want to add more money to it at a time and place of your own choosing you have to pay MORE for a trojan horse bearing device and software package. Even then you can only pay via a credit card rather than just a DC from a bank account and they'll charge you 2% for having the tremerity of doing so!

I should stop now, before I get onto the bully boy price gouging tactics they've used while introducing Snapper on the small retailers and dairy owners who have been loyally selling 10 trip tickets and gold passes for decades...

The only positive side as that unlike in the UK, where they have the system set up to monitor citizens suspects every move, NZ probably couldn't afford such technology.

There are so many better solutions to paying for buses:
- my preference would be for entirely free buses funded by a CBD/motorway congestion charge.
- or, if one wants to be less rad, a fixed fare (say a dollar) so it becomes a lot easier to deal with cash.
- or tokens (like the old New York subway tokens) which could be discounted

Mind you, I live in town and walk everywhere, so i haven't even thought of getting a Snapper card.
