I just had an encounter that made my day. I was pottering near the counter when I heard a mother out iin the shopping centre calling out to her child. Normally I wouldn't notice that since it happens a bazillion times a day. But the name caught my attention ( Read more... )

I was thinking that. I'm nto sure a lot of these peopel consider the fact that their child will have to carry that name for the rest of their life - or until they get it changed - and they may not find it as pretty or fun as the parents do.
I get the feeling that in this case, either the father was a geek or the mother picked it 'cause it sounded 'sophisticated'. She couldn't have had a more bogan accent if she had tried. If you know of Wil Andersons's stand-up bit about bogan mothers who call their children names like Shapelle - well, she pretty much fit the image exactly.
