I think that usage goes back to the 80s. It doesn't (for them) mean the fanfic community as such; it means roughly "the corpus of fanfic related to this anime/manga/tv series". It probably began as a misunderstanding; they heard the terms Star Trek fandom, Tolkien fandom, Gor fandom etc and thought they referred to not the fans but the bodies of work and related fanfic.

Well, selfishly I'd love to see you in March, but from what you've just said, dear God woman, stay in Finland. I think I really just need to get my ass over there finally (Talinn was close, but not close enough) and see you and a bunch of other people. I want to go to Finncon, but I fear that might be 2011 at the earliest. Hmm.
