It seems it's time for another round of Recommend Me a Good Book. Though my to-read shelf is stacked 47 high, little of it is fiction and of that not much is getting me excited. Can you recommend something? I tend to like scifi, though really it's the quality of the writing that counts. Like theseIf something new doesn't turn up, I'm ( Read more... )

Might I suggest "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time" by Mark Haddon? It's an interesting perspective.

I've read Kushiel's Dart in fact. I didn't fall in love with it, but it might be worth picking up the second volume.

I am not done yet, but so far I am enjoying Snow Crash. But... for some reason I think you would either love it or hate it. Several key elements - the portrayal of hackers, an Internet like universe, and tying computer coding with the mystical could be things you enjoy or could be things that would drive you nuts (depending on how much of a "it couldn't happen that way" response you have). Similarly, the libertarian aspect of the universe could intrigue you or could seem grossly simplistic and overly critical.

On the strength of 3/4 of it, I'd recommend giving it a try. If it would drive you nuts, you'd probably know in the first 30 pages. Ditto if you'd love it.

Having just finished (and really dug) Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn triloy , I'd have to recommend that first, though it's more on the fantasy tip.

In the sci-fi realm, definitely check out Mark Budz Till Human Voices Wake us, Clade or Clache, and Stephen Baxter's Transcedent or Flood.
