what really counts

Over the years, I have worked at many companies that were awesome to all appearances, but were home to a bunch of miserable employees---almost always in spite of the best intentions of the management.  As is my habit, I spent a lot of time pondering why this tends to happen and I've identified some common threads.

This reminds me of my experience right now working at Career Services on campus. For students, we have an an activity called the "card sort" where we give them a giant stack of, well, cards. They have nifty things on them like "stable hours", "opportunity to work with others", "feeling respected", and all sorts of other things related to being in a work environment. The end result is that they are forced to pick things that are most important to them at a job to be happy, and in doing so seriously consider what they need in a work environment to be satisfied.

Incidentally, the values that you listed are very in line with my card sort results, and I imagine they do for most folks who want to be satisfied a work.
