I wonder what taking down the wall has done for public opinion of German people. I feel like its existence, at the time, reminded us that these are people, and not all Hitler spawns, and they deserve freedom too. Now, there's no such reminder. Just last week someone asked if my last name was German, and when I said yes, they gave me that "ooooooh" face, like they're going to tattle to the teacher. And I get that alot. And maybe that's just people, and maybe it would have happen twenty years ago, but it is interesting. I wonder if the German people will ever be able to shuffle that stigma off.

My Jewish aunt still can't believe she married a guy with a German last name (and nose). I at least have the luxury of telling people my family left Germany in 1709 and my Mom's German family left in the 1870s to escape the Prussians ( ... )
