It's definitely an either/or scenario. We could just save for a large deposit and go from there. But we'd be nervous of what we'd live on while James was studying and I'd be a full time Mum.

We could work around it, maybe James could study part time and take care of kids while I work full time, or some sort of work/study/child-rearing combo between the two of us. But that'd be a decision to make in 4 years when we've finished our stint in Halls Creek. That decision doesn't feel terribly different from the path we've chosen because it'd still be hard and complicated. Mortgage paying/rent paying are not dissimilar and mortgage paying comes with one of us working as our saving would have been pooled into a down payment. *sigh* so complicated!

have u ever thought that u might end up buying a house oversees, or wherever you're going to be doing some missionary work? Australia is one of the most expensive places in the world to buy a house now. You could buy 4 houses in USA for the price of one in Australia. I wonder if Simon-Peter's mother-in-laws's house in Capernaum is on the market - it seems that Jesus was probably able to lay his head there on more than one occasion. As for display homes - pffft!

Notwithstanding that though - would James like a special tea cup from us for his birthday? Glad you're enjoying the time catching up with friends, but enjoy having a rest too - I don't think you'd want to get back to HC burnt out eh?

The questions are: where are we going to live while James is studying at Trinity? How is all that money we've saved going to be used while James is studying at Trinity?

If we wait to buy a house overseas, we'll be living on our savings via rent, slowly depleting it over 4-6yrs in Perth, making owning a house less likely wherever we end up. If we end up buying we could own our house outright, or with a minimal mortgage and then resell it when we move overseas in order to buy a house there.

It's all something to think more seriously about WHEN THE TIME COMES, but it's interesting to think about now :)

I'm sure James would like a special tea cup for his birthday.

Mission work is more important than owning and having the stability of a house.

I also keep feeling the pressure of taking the easy path. It's just so fun and easy! I find that I'm often repeating almost exactly what you wrote to myself when I feel like it would be heaps nicer to throw it all in and just do the regular thing.
