"I read an article of yours, fire and brimstone, in yesterday's Yediot. Rico showed it to me, he said, Read this, Dad, and don't get worked up, just try to grasp where we are living and where all this lunacy is leading us. That's what he said, more or less. I think you're right that it's a way of not taking responsibility for one's actions, but I think it's also a way people act when they're scared. I have a friend who drinks himself into a stupor and generally makes an ass of himself every weekend or whenever friends are around and it's pretty clear to me it's a way of keeping people at an arm's length...only the strong survive. He knows he can trust people if they see his horrid behavior and they stick around. I think it's a form of that. Being unsure of yourself so you act cocky or like a jerk to keep people away so they won't see the scared little you inside.

Yeah, it clearly started out as a protective behavior. Then the behavior started to come before the need for protection and now everything is ambiguous to a fault.

These days, when I am trying to discuss something worth speaking on, everyone thinks I am "having a laugh". People have forgotten there are serious discussions that need to be had. Sometimes my calm sincerity is mistaken as hysteria. Suddenly I'm a 19th cetury woman who needs to get knocked up so she can be sane again.

I guess I would again say that they're just scared of the big issues. They can't handle it, it's easier to laugh it off or pretend like you weren't being serious.
