Honeymoon In Peril, Part One

“Are you sure they’ll be okay without us?” Ianto asked as the TARDIS door closed behind him.

“They’ll be fine,” Jack reassured him. “And Tom and Rhys can give them a hand if need be.”

“But…”

“Hello, time machine?” the Doctor interrupted, eager to get going. “We could be back in a few minutes, a few seconds even.”

Both Ianto and Jack fixed him with a cynical look.

“OK, so we could try to be back in a few minutes, anyway.”

Ianto tilted his head thoughtfully in acquiescence.

“So, do you have any destination in mind or should I just choose somewhere? It’s up to you, it’s your honeymoon after all.”

Jack and Ianto looked at each other and shrugged minutely.

“We could go to Barcelona,” the Doctor interjected, bouncing on his toes. “I’ve always wanted to take someone to Barcelona. The planet, that is.”

Communicating silently with a look, Jack and Ianto came to agreement.

“Sounds great, Doctor,” Jack said, knowing that the Doctor had indeed offered to take several companions there, only to be prevented from doing so every time.

“Really?” The Doctor’s grin took over his whole face.

Ianto smiled indulgently. “Absolutely.”

Running around the console, the Doctor fiddled with a few levers before an alarm sounded. Bringing up a new screen on the display, the Doctor’s face fell.

“What is it, Doc?” Jack asked, spotting the worried look.

“I’ve got a distress call from Heklaiy Theta. I don’t have to answer it, but…”

“Oh yes you do.” Ianto and Jack had spoken simultaneously. The Doctor took a moment to smile at their level of synchronicity before speaking.

“Right. I can come back for you in…”

“No. We’re coming with you.” Jack interrupted him.

“We want to help.” Ianto continued.

Realising that nothing he could say would sway their combined stubbornness, the Doctor nodded and set a new course, pulling a lever to put them into flight.

The TARDIS lurched suddenly, and Ianto would have gone crashing to the floor had Jack not hooked an arm around his waist, pulling him into his side.

Ianto lifted an eyebrow teasingly. “For a brilliant and advanced time-and-space ship, she doesn’t exactly fly smoothly, does she?” His grin softened what might otherwise have been a derogatory remark.

“Oi!” the Doctor complained. “I’ve told you before. She’s supposed to have six pilots. I do my best here.”

“I know, I know,” Ianto replied, shaking his head good-naturedly.

“So, what kind of impending disaster are we looking at here?” Jack asked, dragging the conversation back to the upcoming mission.

“I’m not completely sure,” the Doctor told them, “but that’s half the fun.”

Ianto fixed him with a look.

“All I know is that it came from the Aerokin, which probably means they’re in serious trouble. They’re a peaceful race, which unfortunately means they’re rather prone to being invaded. My guess is that’s what’s happening here.”

“So what can we do?” Ianto wanted to know. “If they’re a peaceful race then…”

“Yes,” the Doctor said. “They won’t fight back. But maybe we can help stop the invasion without making them. We’ll see when we get there.”

As if on cue, the TARDIS shuddered to a halt.

“Alright, Ianto Jones, ready for your first alien planet?” the Doctor grinned.

Ianto set his shoulders and grabbed Jack’s hand. “As I’ll ever be.”

With his usual enthusiasm, the Doctor ran to the door. “All right, then, allons-y!”

The world they stepped out into was clearly war-ravaged. Buildings were falling to pieces around them, and there was the unmistakable sound of bombs falling in the distance. They surveyed the devastation with dismay.

“Reminds me of when we first met,” Jack remarked reflectively to the Doctor, who nodded.

“So who sent out the signal?” Ianto asked. “I’m assuming we want to go talk to them?”

“An old friend of mine, Ashehr,” the Doctor said. “He’s the leader of the high council.”

“And that would be where?” Ianto looked around them.

The Doctor copied the move before starting off in one direction. “This way. Or at least it was the last time I was here.”

They had been walking for several minutes, down almost deserted streets and past ramshackle buildings, when the whine of the falling bombs suddenly seemed a lot closer.

They had only a few seconds warning before a deafening explosion filled the air around them, and the already unstable building beside them began to collapse on top of them.
