You know, I used to think that menstruation itself was a design flaw, but have since then mulled it over and decided that, ideally excuted, it's not a bad system. Regular renewal, of a sort, and a consistent excuse to get out of P.E. i've been thinking about the evolution question a lot lately...it's not my fault, i'm taking an archaeological theory class. i don't really side with those uber-scientific, neo-enlightenment anthros who say that every aspect of human culture, past and present, is an external apparatus for adapting to one's environment. but i do believe that physical evolution, in the Darwinian sense, has slowed down, maybe even stopped. i think that at present, our apparatus of adapting to our environment (including our physical bodies) resides in our brains, in knowledge and communication. maybe biological evolution stopped when we developed a means of communicating knowledge, through language or tools or art or whatever. but, for better or worse, our current knowledge allows us to compensate for anemia and other imbalances through diet and supplements; to chemically override pain; and to talk about the influence our bodies are having on our minds, feelings, actions, etc. cultural sensitivity to the cycles of women's psychic and physical help ( ... )
