[OTA, TAG CHASE, FOX, ROB] Assumption makes an ass out of you... and some guy named "Umption."

House had been sitting up in his office when his pager went off. It was Chase. He couldn't tell if his page meant Fox was taking Rob off of the life support, or if this meant Rob was awake and dancing on the tables. House was pretty sure the former was going to be the one he was going to have to deal with ( Read more... )

Chase came up beside House, both of them still a safe enough distance away to not intrude on anythign Fox might be trying to say to Rob. He caught the sigh of relief and threw House a small smirk as he folded his arms across his chest. "Is it going to piss you off more that there are no explanations for any of this, or that there isn't a puzzle to solve anymore?" he asked.

"Absolutely," House answered lightly, eyes shifting from the couple to Chase. It was something he would ask Rob about when he woke up. Right now, the fact that House didn't have to spend the energy he really did not possess at this stage of the game to convince and/or guilt Fox into keeping Rob alive was a bit of a weight off of his shoulders. He'd deal with that later. "I told you he was going to wake up," he added.

Chase snorted. "Yeah, right. You were as fucked over on this as the rest of us. He trumped you and you hated it. Now he's just..." He gestured to the bed. "I was about thirty seconds from removing the ventilator when he started choking on it. She wasn't going to switch it off, House. Taking your own life is one thing, but taking someone else's is an entirely different ball game."

"As far as I remember," House started, "... She's not the kind of person that has qualms about killing other people." He turned his attention back to Rob, pressing his lips together as he he tightened the grip on the handle of his cane. Rob was an interesting one, he was willing to admit. Exactly how interesting he was going to be when he was completely conscious was an entirely different story. "Any sign of brain damage? Has he spoken?"

This time, Rob woke himself up coughing again. His throat was so dry and raw, and it almost felt like he was learning to breathe all over again. His hand was feeling blindly but slowly around the bed beside his hips before he could drag his eyes open a little again. When they opened, his hand stilled, finding her sitting beside him. Was it just another dream? He was dead, wasn't he? "Fox," he got out this time, his breathless voice scratchy and hoarse. His fingers connected with hers and behind the oxygen mask, he smiled. "Hey..."

Fox sat up as she tightened her grip a little on Rob's fingers and returned the smile. "Hey, soldier." While he'd been sleeping again she'd been lost in her own thoughts. "At least you remember me."

The man with the cane wasn't even on Fox's radar. If it was the mysterious House, he could wait. She hadn't seen him at all during Rob's illness, Chase the only doctor she'd had contact with. She gave him the briefest of glances over her shoulder before her attention was fixed on Rob again.

For a moment, House's eyes locked with Fox's. He could tell she barely left Rob's side since the last time he stood outside the room. She was still scared. Rightly so, he argued, but he saw that she knew Rob wasn't home free just yet. House wasn't exactly the Gone With the Wind type; not believing unconditional love was ever really unconditional, and he couldn't help but wonder if Fox would still love Rob just the same if she had to spend the next fifty years wiping drool away from his face. At the very least, Rob was going to be on quite a few medications for the next six months if he walked away from this otherwise in perfect health.

He stepped over to the bed, taking his penlight out of his pocket and leaning over Rob, checking his pupil response. Even, responsive... generally a good sign. House took a quick look over at Fox before gesturing toward her and locking eyes with Rob. "I know you know her name... You remember yours?"

Rob really wanted to grab the light and stick it up House's ass. Didn't he realise how bright it was? He still didn't have the strength for much of anything right now, though, so he settled on a small annoyed frown. "Of course I do. Why wouldn't I?" he said, still sounding much like he had just been strangled. It wasn't even a cool porno voice, it was just Marge Simpson-esque. For some reason his mind took a leap to his colleague Keith. That had been some damn dream and he felt a spike of panic shoot through him. He looked at House, then to Fox. "Rob. Rob Laird." This time it came out like a rough whisper.
