[OTA] A woman's work is never done

Sep 21, 2009 23:40

It was another typical day on the island, and therefore another typical stressful day for Cuddy. Being the Resort Manager never seemed to come without hassles, and over the last couple of days, there had been a dramatic influx of new arrivals complete with a small handful who just did not want to take the news rationally. This was where not only ( Read more... )

The day had been anything but typical for House. Despite the initial crawl out of bed, the entire day House had felt completely out of place everywhere he went, and everything little thing that could have possibly gone wrong seemed to do just that. Perhaps that was just his brain's outward projection of whatever... inner struggle his mind was currently wrestling with concerning the ever-frustrating Lisa Cuddy and he was deluding himself into thinking the entire world had been pitted against him that day, but still. Not the point. Things still felt off. He was used enough to the island by now to know what constituted "weird" here and what didn't.

Then again, it didn't help that everything had been atypical ever since his little "date" with the doctor. Or... "resort manager." Whatever. Cuddy was still Cuddy, and she was still, to his chagrin, occupying more space inside his head than he probably would have offered in the first place should he have had that choice ( ... )

"Did you put in a call with our maintenance office, or were you just trying to use your evil genius psychic powers to will my staff to your beck and call?" Cuddy asked, shooting him a slightly long-suffering look. "It's very easy. That big blue button on the phone handset in your room should get you right through. Or you could always bribe Wilson to do it for you."

She went back to her coffee, but was watching him over the top of it. It seemed things were easier for them both just to launch things right back to square one. Cuddy had looked forward to the date, though she had doubted either of them could actually pull it off. And her doubts had been well-seated. There wasn't much time in general that House was very far from her mind, but she gave into that glimmer of hope that island had maybe turned a corner for them. She had been wrong. They both seemed too set in their ways with the snarky push-and-pull tug-of-war for either of them to give out the upper hand without a fight... or to admit their feelings readily.

House pressed his lips together in an annoyed half-smile. "You're the resort manager. Manage your resort. You're supposed to know when things break down, and you're supposed to get someone to fix them ( ... )

Cuddy sighed and looked at him in lieu of rolling her eyes. "Yes, I'm the resort manager. I manage staff to operate the resort. If you want to put in a complaint about maintenance, feel free. I will look into it. If you have just come with some constructed reason to approach me that doesn't involve personal feelings, then you will be wasting my time as well as theirs. I would say yours, but you're probably bored and need entertainment, so at the end of the day, this won't be a waste of your time at all."

She paused, her light eyes taking in the weathered features of his face. "Why wait twenty years to put them to the test if that is what you want?" she asked pointedly.
