[ARRIVAL - OTA] London doesn't have coconut trees

Sep 30, 2009 14:38

Matt looked up and watched a seagull flying over his head with the backdrop of a crisp, cloudless blue sky. His mouth was hanging open slightly as he followed the bird and then his blue eyes landed on... was that a coconut tree? And why was it day and not night like it was a minute ago? He was rugged up in winter clothing, a long thick coat and ( Read more... )

James was sitting on the warm sand with "Quidditch Through the Ages" open in his lap. He had tossed his usual khakis and dress shirt for black and green board shorts and a white tank top but instead of taking to the ocean, he used the beach as a place to calm himself. James flipped through the pages that he had read a thousand times at Hogwarts, memories flashing in and out of his head and a smirk spread across James' face. He glanced up and noticed a man dressed in a long coat battling with a scarf. James closed the book and walked over.

"Having a little trouble? This is hardly the place you would need a long coat and scarf. I'm James." He extended his hand to the stranger. Sure James was still relatively new to the island but he was getting on pretty well, and he figured this fellow could use a friendly face in the confusion.

Matt didn't actually place anything out of the ordinary with the man. They were both English, and why wouldn't they be? The only thing was, he didn't actually make it a habit of chatting to people in his dreams, so this was unusual. What was dream chatting ettiquette?

"You would think my brain would at least give me a t-shirt in my dream if i was going to drop me on a hot a beach. London winter clothing is hardly conducive," he replied, trying not to get too snippy in his frustration. He finally tugged the scarf off his neck and went on to flick open the buttons on his coat. He was looking warily at the other man. "Do I know you?" he asked, tring to figure out if he had crossed the man's path somewhere recently on the job to have him cropping up in his dreams.

James retracted his hand and chuckled. "Sorry to tell you, but you're not in a dream. This is all real. You are here now because in your other world, you needed to get away. That's what this is, a break from your other life. I know it can be a hard thing to believe, but you've got to trust me on this." James shook his head. "No, you wouldn't know me. I have a feeling that I came before your time." James chuckled again but covered his mouth.

"I apologize for all the laughter, this just reminds me of when I first got here. Took me ages to believe it wasn't all some fucked up dream."

Matt would be lying if he didn't admit to himself that he was at least slightly put out at being laughed at. He personally couldn't see anything amusing about the situation, especially when the guy was talking about fairy stories. "There's no such thing," he scoffed and swiped some droplets off sweat off his forehead with his scarf. "Let alone time travel. It sounds like you have been watching too much TV, mate."

In saying that, Matt didn't know if he wanted to stop and think why he was arguing with a figment of his imagination. Maybe he was finally cracking up. He usually wasn't this much of a bastard, even if he did have bastard moments. Usually they were aimed at colleagues or suspects, though. Whatever was going on, Matt was extremely unnverved and wondering why he couldn't wake up out of the weird dream.
