Chase was sure that if he smoked, he would be on a pack a day by now. Drinking was out of the question. He wasn't going to do anything stupid to fry his brain cells. Cuddy pushed her sunglasses on top of her head as she arrived back at the Medical Centre that morning. She adjusted her handbag over her shoulder and approached Chase, her heels clicking softly on the sidewalk. "You look like you've got the weight of the world on your shoulders, Dr Chase," she noted, watching him closely.

Chase looked up, shielding his eyes from the bright island sun with a small smile. "Not quite the world, just the island," he corrected. "One of the patients is my... friend. Good friend. Plus the soldier's condition keeps deteriorating. More are coming in with it. I just feel like we're running out of time."

Cuddy tilted her head a little. "Which patient? Your Head Nurse?" She looked at him as if contemplating reading between the lines of his comment. There was something about the way he hesitated before saying 'friend'. There was more to that than meets the eye. "You are running out of time. Why do you think I used to get so frustrated when House was in the morgue shooting cadavers rather than spending time with the living and dying patients? There's no rulebook how to deal with him, Chase. You just do. Only, God knows I never even managed that very well," she added, pushing her hair off her face.

She leaned against the wall beside him. "Are you okay? You, not everyone else."
