Calm before the Storm [Closed to Chase]

For a few selfish moments, Peter strongly disliked Rob for being unconscious before the surgery. The man had effectively left Peter feeling even more useless, and isolated. A nurse sharing a room with a patient was suddenly a terrible idea. Even if Peter was a patient, too. His urge to help had been strong, and again, he'd nearly hurt himself ( Read more... )

Chase had a surgical mask hanging around his throat waiting for him to scrub into the surgery. Rob had suffered a pulmonary embolism and tests following showed a blood clot located on his pulmonary atery. It had to be removed ASAP. Chase was a qualified surgeon, but he hadn't practiced as one since his days in Melbourne prior to coming to House's team. He was nervous, but he had paged his on-call surgical team to assist and Wilson was going to be there too. They just had to wait for everyone to arrive, and in the meantime, Rob was unconscious and intubated so the machines could breath for him.

Rob had dislodged the chest drain during the seizure, too, but it was now back in place, though they needed to continuously check the lines in case it blocked. Chase collected a small vial of saline from the trolley to flush the line and gave a small shrug. "A little. I'm fine." He drew the syringe up and glanced at Peter. "Are you okay? I know none of what just happened with Rob would have been easy to see, especially not two separate crashes

Peter made a face like he wanted to shrug, but didn't quite have the energy. "Just hard. My first instinct is to help, but I can't. Just lie here and vomit. Some Head Nurse, huh? Sure you don't want to rethink the promotion? And you need more than a little sleep. You should eat properly, too."

Chase connected the syringe to the drain and slowly pushed down on the plunger. He shook his head. "I can't eat or I'll be vomiting right along with you," he murmured. He met Peter's eyes and then disconnected the syringe. "Don't blame yourself. You blame yourself and that means I'm at fault a hundred times worse. None of this should have happened. We should have gotten the answer before this. And I have to talk to Fox after the surgery and try to tell her we suspected he's headed for multiple organ failure because we're too stupid to find out what's wrong with him."

Peter's fingers curled against the bed sheets, and he frowned in frustration, and pain. It was hard to try and keep his features relaxed as his stomach roiled. Not to mention he was worried about Chase. "So hook yourself up to an IV and carry it around with you. You need to take care of yourself. At least one of us has to. And you're not all stupid. Human bodies are complicated. Not everything is as simple as take a couple of pain killers and take it easy. No one's blaming you."
