I hate drugs...but I like guitars

I just don't do drugs, legal or otherwise (unless dark beers count...I do dark beers). When I had my wisdom teeth surgically carved from my jawbones, e.g., I took one of the prescription pain killers afterwards, and was so completely wiped out by it that I decided I preferred the discomfort and took no more. In preparation for my trip to Costa ( Read more... )

I'll be at La Selva Biological Field Station, Costa Rica, for a database workshop. There is a bit of a malaria threat there, so I'm expected to take this damned chloroquine for two weeks before, the two weeks I'm there, and four weeks following. It's icky...but I'm guessing malaria is worse.

Ah, gotcha. My hubby took antimalarial when he went to India the first time. I think he took the kind that made your tongue turn black. A colleague of mine came back from a Peace Corps stint in Papua New Guinea with malaria. A year after his return, he ended up unconscious in the hospital for two weeks with a fever of 107 and a spinal tap. A few weeks of black tongue would definitely have been preferrable.

Still - wish anyone had ever offered me a database workshop in Costa Rica. I had to learn everything about databasing ITO (in the office).

I think that Malaria was the reason that the Gin and Tonic cocktail was invented. Tonic does have a small amount of quinine and I believe in the 1800s had much more.

Thanks for the Youtube video on SUVs...I laughed...and then, due to the unfortunately incisive nature of the video and its accurate depiction of the subject matter, I fell into a mild depression - LOL

...I don't think Costa Rica is particularly renowned for its coffee...

OTOH, from what I can tell, neither is Iowa, but the Iowegians seem to be a friendly enough tribe, so far!

Well, I do do dark beers in extreme moderation, but I can't claim any taste for the gin and tonic cocktail. I hope the Chloroquine will suffice!

PS: I actually hear friends raving about coffee in Costa Rica. Unfortunately for me, I don't do coffee either. I do do green tea, but I don't think that's a big Costa Rican thing.

I'm sure Costa Rica has good coffee, possibly even great coffee, but to clarify what I said, they're not reknowned as a coffee exporter to the North American market. Guatemala, on the other hand, is.

I like green tea occasionally, but I'd rather have a good strong black tea.
That being said, coffee is still my favorite caffeinated beverage. I think i have 6 coffee makers at the moment.

Having had Malaria TWICE as a boy... the anti-malarials are cool! Worst feeling of my 52 year old life!

Yikes! I'm glad you got through it. Yeah, I'm willingly ingesting the chloroquine on the assumption that the resultant feeling is the lesser of two evils.
