Thomas Viloteau performed here in Salt Lake City the previous night. I did not attend, 90% because his announced programme left me cold. "A matter of personal taste", I admit, but the Ginestera Sonata is a complete deal-buster to my ears.

There are very few performers out there who can make that piece sound like music, but in the hands of those who can, it's breathtaking. And I say this as someone who used to loathe the thing implacably until I heard María Isabel Siewers' recording of it. On the strength of that, I'd learn it at the drop of a hat if I thought I had a hope of getting my fingers round it.

Like Raphaela said. I really liked Thomas' program in that it was 1) all guitar music (no transcription) 2) all stuff a bit off the beaten path and not often performed in concert, and 3) all bold 20th c. repertoire selected for personal love of the stuff.

I happen to be with David on this one. The main problem, for me, with this Ginastera, is that it has become so over played, it is not far behind Koyunbaba for blandness. I missed the Columbus concert, but I did hear Thomas at the GFA just a few days before. It was the rest of his program that was simply of sterling quality. And he is a really nice guy. Thanks for bringing him over to me house.
