I wasn't planning to post anything on this topic until there was something to post. Gary surprised me by moving at hyper speed and gave me reason to post earlier than expected.

My friend Gary has taken up guitar building. He's been pressing me to order an instrument from him for a little while. Well, I really didn't need and really hadn't ( Read more... )

Gary added images of the boards to comprise the back and the shaping of the heel since my initial post. Today he tells me he has joined the soundboard panels.

Cocobolo is great wood. Depending on the specimen, it can range from orange blended with brown and yellow, to deep brown with orange and/or yellow highlights. I love it ( ... )

Good to "see" you again, Sittius.

I wasn't aware there were any rosewoods in Florida. I did a little digging and discovered an Indian species, Dalbergia sissoo, is considered an invasive in Florida and Australia. Is that the species to which you refer?

I have seen a couple guitars of wenge. Yes, it does have pronounced and elongated pores, but those couple I've seen seemed to hold together alright. I suppose I'm glad I wasn't doing the bending.

Regarding purpleheart, it's not uncommon for lute builders to alternate ribs of purpleheart with a pale wood. It's kinda a neat look. Somewhere I have a photo of a descant lute by Luciano Faria in ribs of alternating purpleheart and maple.

Regarding photos of the guitar, of course, but I'm sure I would only be linking to photos posted on Gary's site. There are a fair number of the build underway there already.
