Potentially bad news on the splinters:
I once stepped on a small glass sliver that escaped detection (i.e. "Oh yeah. I got it out - whew!") for almost a year. For 10 months, I'd get an occasional sharp pain in the sole of my foot. By the end of month 12, it became more constant and annoying. I finally noticed it one day after a long hot shower. There was a small bulge in the sole, which when I probed it with various implements, yielded up a sliver of glass about 1/2" long.
At least glass is sterile ( or at least that's what I've heard).
And whatever residual pain you may have today shouldn't keep you from sleeping at nights: you did the honorable and civic-minded thing.
