Samaritanism

As too often happens, I have fallen into a state of busy and neglected my blogging duties. I had so much news to write on fieldwork, contracts/grants with various agencies, new responsibilities at my little island lab, wedding gigs, concert gigs, coming concert seasons, etc., but have been distracted by a singular brief event that occurred last ( Read more... )

Yeah. Why is it every passing motorist becomes enraged because an accident is impeding their progress? I don't enjoy delays, but I sure don't become angry about it. Generally, my first reaction is to dial 911 (unless I can see that someone already has).

I will say this about the CR/IC area: people DO willingly (critics might say too much so) stop to assist when there are accidents and breakdowns. In this respect, Iowa has to be the greatest place I've resided.

That's great. I need to visit that region more often...not necessarily because of random samaritanism, but to see a few friends who live out thataway.

PS: I think both my feet have managed to shed their splinters now, or the region around the splinters is now numbed by frequent grating.

Well, let me know when you're coming to town.

Potentially bad news on the splinters:

I once stepped on a small glass sliver that escaped detection (i.e. "Oh yeah. I got it out - whew!") for almost a year. For 10 months, I'd get an occasional sharp pain in the sole of my foot. By the end of month 12, it became more constant and annoying. I finally noticed it one day after a long hot shower. There was a small bulge in the sole, which when I probed it with various implements, yielded up a sliver of glass about 1/2" long.

At least glass is sterile ( or at least that's what I've heard).

And whatever residual pain you may have today shouldn't keep you from sleeping at nights: you did the honorable and civic-minded thing.

Ah well. Still something clearly lurking in the left foot. Foot is developing a small blister around the irritation.

Weird. Fortunately, I recited the intersection where the SUV roll occurred, and the 911 dispatcher pinpointed the location really quickly, even in spite of my own communication being garbled by juggling a few conversations at once.
