Observations of the Free...

I have, in the past few months, come into a consideration of a few things in regards to the coverage of and reaction to world events. I went to a play called ‘Death (and Love) in Gaza’ which depicted the efforts of Rachel Corrie, an American international peace activist in Palestine, under the pseudonym of ‘Ruth’ and, although I was already aware ( Read more... )

I think that's a record for an LJ post - 1800 words. I can't remember what I was looking for, but through Google I found a most amusing article which gave details of all chemical and nuclear weapons "due to the dangers of recent time". That's possibly the best way ever to instill fear. It was great. "One drop of this chemical will kill you in seconds. There is a cocktail for chemicals as an antidote but would need to technically be used the moment the chemical touches you, otherwise it'd be too late. Too difficult to be made by terrorist groups, more likely stolen from a weakly guarded site in a country like Russia."

The problem is though, that we do have freedom of speech. Irregardless of what most people say, it is, by and large, availible to a significant portion of the world, on paper atleast ( ... )

My point isnt so much freedom of speech as freedom of speech for those who are at 'ground zero' so to speak. What we get is a media version of events from people who are professionally assigned to report on world events. Wouldn't it be significantly more informative if the people who are dying and, possibly more important, those who are killing the innocents get their views published? It's not like it would really take that much effort its just a matter of getting them to write something without the threat of negative consequence.

Well that is kinda hapening through the internet with things like livejournal, (though more often blog sites that arent dominated by 18 year old girls lol). That said the media is the media, like you said its the middle, its theoretically the go-between so its not strictly speaking taking everything in.
But ultimately its like in history where most of the sources are based on lettes and other primary evidence, which is possible with hindsight and reasearch but isnt realy feasable in current events.

The media isnt controlled by America so much as it is controlled by prejudices that are also common to most Americans. And ur point regarding how selfish people are is just about the whole idea i was working with. Even the sending of monetary aid is done, whether the participants no it or not, so that those who send the money feel good about themselves, not to help those in need.

And you are intelligent...

as Nikhil would say, "I feel you dawg"!
And Nikhil would know. He is black after all.

Except i'm a bit more optimistic. i hope/think (and those two words do become very mixed in my head) that there is something we can do about it. The most amazing thing that science has only partially discovered reasons for is the human trust in human goodwill.

Peace

"Wouldn't it be nice if everyone was nice?" Personally if I thought I could do something significant, I would but other than actually participating in a media enterprise there isn't much to do...so I'll try for that ;)
