Hyukjae paced nervously in front of the door to the Student Council room, seemingly oblivious that he had been doing so for the last half hour. All he could think of was the daunting task ahead of him, and he wondered again how he had managed to land himself into his current predicament.
“Hurry up, Hyuk! We don’t have all day, you know!” An annoyed voice cut into his thoughts, and Hyukjae stopped pacing to glare at his supposed best friend, Sungmin.
“No one told you to come! And, what’s with the video camera?”
“Of course I have to be here! Or else you would have chickened out of the dare long ago and we can’t have that.” Sungmin sent a brilliant smile in Hyukjae’s direction while waving the video camera at him. “And this is to record everything, of course! Everyone will kill me if I didn’t record it down for them.”
Sighing in frustration, Hyukjae frowned at the thought of having his dare recorded. It was embarrassing enough to have to go up to his crush and kiss him, in a public environment no less, but to have the entire event recorded would be downright mortifying. However, he knew that there was no use trying to go against Sungmin - the latter was just too stubborn and also his other friends, especially Heechul hyung, would have his hide if he did so.
“Just get it over and done with! You’re acting like a girl, you know?” Sungmin rolled his eyes at Hyukjae. They had been there for almost half an hour now, and although his best friend had been an amusing sight at first, he was getting bored.
“Shut up!” Hyukjae puffed out his cheeks and mentally cursed Sungmin. Stupid best friend, how can he do this to me? To think I supported him and listened to him when he was having problems with Kyuhyun… I won’t be so understanding the next time! Aish… Why did I even go to that stupid party? Then I wouldn’t be in this situation now!
3 DAYS AGO - AT HEECHUL’S BIRTHDAY PARTY
Hyukjae pushed through the crowd gyrating wildly to the music pulsing out of speakers and made his way off the dance floor. It was Heechul hyung’s birthday and while his hyung had of course invited what seemed to be practically the entire school to his birthday party, most of them were unaware that there was a more private celebration in a function room on the second floor. Hyukjae entered the room to see that all his friends were already there waiting for him. Sungmin was bothering Kyuhyun as usual, distracting the younger from his PSP until he finally gave up and directed his full attention at the elder. They waved to him before going back to whatever they were doing. Yesung was playing with Ddangkoma as usual - wait, why was Ddangkoma even here? Hyukjae stared at the turtle in disbelief, though a part of him told him he should have been used to Yesung's antics by now. He spotted Heechul with Kangin, Eeteuk and Hankyung and he hastily moved over to greet them.
“Happy birthday, Heechul hyung!” Hyukjae crossed his fingers behind his back, hoping that the elder male would not realize the lack of a present, even as he smiled in greeting to his other three hyungs.
“Yah took you long enough, you monkey! How can you make me wait? Never mind, drink this.” Heechul shoved a light blue drink into Hyukjae’s grasp. Thinking that Heechul had forgotten about his present, he sighed in relief before inspecting the fancy glass he had in his hand. He was about to decline but Heechul had already pre-empted him, saying “It’s just a special mocktail, no alcohol content at all.”
“Oh, alright. Thanks, hyung! I was so thirsty after all that dancing.” Flashing a smile at Heechul which showed more gums than teeth, he downed the drink in one gulp, regretting it almost immediately. The drink burned its way down his throat and he coughed violently, not used to the feeling. “H-Hyung! D-Did you g-give me the wrong d-drink?”
“Here, this will make it better,” said Eeteuk, passing another glass to Hyukjae, who drank it without second thought. It was just as bad as the first, if not worse. Hyukjae hit Eeteuk’s shoulder in retaliation, realizing that both his hyungs had given him alcohol on purpose.
“Eeteuk hyung!” Hyukjae’s voice went almost unheard amidst the laughter that echoed throughout the room. Pouting, he settled himself down between Sungmin and Yesung. “You guys know I don’t drink… Now I’ve broken my promise to Junsu!” Hankyung handed him another drink, and Hyukjae sniffed at it experimentally, scrunching up his nose at the smell.
“You monkey, just drink it! Since your promise’s already broken then there’s no point in keeping it anymore!” Heechul jabbed a finger in his direction accusingly. “And where is my present?”
Hyukjae froze. “Eh…” I can’t believe he remembered! “Hyung, I owe you one present, ok?” He smiled brightly at Heechul, hoping that it would be enough for his hyung.
“No!” Smirking at Hyukjae’s expression, he continued, “But maybe if you forget about that stupid no alcohol rule of yours tonight, I will reconsider it.” Heechul of course had no intentions of letting it slide so easily, and getting Hyukjae to drink was just the first of many things he had in mind. The pinkish tinge to his dongsaeng’s cheeks already told him that his plan would be a success, and the others seemed to know it too, judging from the identical grins they had.
Hyukjae was blissfully oblivious to all these, however. All he knew was that Heechul was rarely in such a generous mood and so he nodded hurriedly in agreement. Heechul hyung is definitely not one to cross…
PRESENT
Hyukjae scowled at the memory of the party 3 days ago. His friends had pushed drink after drink to him and he did not dare to decline, for fear of upsetting Heechul. He could not remember much of that night when he woke up the next day with a splitting headache and a stiff neck (he had apparently slept with his head lolling to one side while Sungmin’s legs were sprawled haphazardly across his own). As if that was not enough to put him off alcohol for the rest of his life, his friends had also proudly informed him that he had agreed to a dare the previous night. Their gleeful expressions already told him that he was so screwed, but he certainly did not expect Kyuhyun’s words.
“Don’t you remember? We were playing truth or dare and you were dared to kiss Donghae, and you agreed!”
Honestly, Hyukjae wasn’t even sure if he had said such a thing, he was that out of it. He had tried refusing, but it was futile and thus he was now in this predicament. Why had he ever told Sungmin that he liked Donghae, anyway? He had been crushing on the male for almost a year now. Although Donghae was in the same class as him, he didn’t think they were really close. As the President of the Student Council, Donghae was always busy. He was also almost always surrounded by people, mostly female students to be precise, no doubt due to his approachable nature and good looks. Hyukjae had been content admiring him from afar, while Sungmin would always roll his eyes exasperatedly at him and encourage him to talk to Donghae. Once, Sungmin had gotten tired of his friend’s love struck behavior and had dragged him up to Donghae, hissing a short “At least tell him you would like to be friends!” into Hyukjae’s ear before leaving both of them alone.
Hyukjae winced at that memory. He had been so nervous to be in such close proximity to Donghae that he had just stared at the other male, unable to form any coherent sentences. Donghae had looked at him questioningly before asking, “Hi, you’re Hyukjae right? Can I call you Hyukkie?” Hyukjae thought he would literally melt with happiness at that moment. That was the start of their friendship, if it could be considered one. They did hang out occasionally, but Donghae was so popular with the students that he could never be sure if the younger regarded him as a real friend or just an acquaintance.
Taking a deep breath, Hyukjae crossed his fingers and prayed hard that Donghae would not freak out too much. He stepped up resolutely to the door to the council’s room, too nervous to even acknowledge Sungmin’s encouraging pat on his back. Just as he was about to knock, however, the door flew open, knocking Hyukjae off his feet and onto the ground. Dazed, he blinked and tried to ignore Sungmin’s laughter from behind, turning a deep shade of red as he realized how embarrassing that must have looked. He kept his eyes on the ground, not wanting to know how many people had witnessed his fall.
“Oh my gosh! I’m so sorry, are you hurt? Eh… Hyukkie?” Hyukjae’s head shot up in disbelief - I can’t be that unlucky, can I? - and Donghae’s face swam into view. Oh. My. God. Someone please kill me now, that was so embarrassing! How am I going to kiss him? Why isn’t he laughing at me?
“W-What are you d-doing here?” The words were out before he could stop them, and Hyukjae resisted the urge to slap himself. What kind of stupid question was that? He’s the Student Council’s President, of course he would be in the council room. Way to go, Hyukjae.
“Eh? Never mind, let’s get you up first. I’m so sorry! I was distracted and I didn’t mean to open the door like that.” Donghae lifted Hyukjae up from the ground easily, before checking him for injuries. “Are you hurt? I didn’t injure you anywhere, did I?”
“Uh, it’s okay, r-really. I-I’m fine…” Hyukjae desperately wished he would stop stuttering, it merely added to the embarrassment he was currently feeling. “Um. Are you in a rush?”
“Oh, not really. Are you sure you’re fine, though? Maybe I should take you to the infirmary?” Genuinely concerned, Donghae took Hyukjae’s hand and started leading him away from the room.
Hyukjae’s heart skipped a beat at the sudden contact. I hope my palm isn’t sweaty… He was reminded of his undone dare again when he caught sight of Sungmin’s amused expression across the hall. Panicking, he stopped walking and blurted out, “No!” Feeling Donghae’s confused gaze on him, he took a deep breath and repeated himself. “I mean, no… I’m ok now. Um.” Hyukjae’s eyes unconsciously flickered to Donghae’s lips and he swallowed in nervousness, trying to gather up enough courage for his next move. This is it. Please don’t hate me.
Boldly placing his free hand on Donghae’s shoulder, he pulled the male in and swiftly pressed a chaste kiss upon the other’s lips. Donghae’s lips were soft, and better than anything he had ever imagined. He noted how the other’s eyes widened in surprise, and quickly pulled back before Donghae could push him away. He didn’t think his heart would be able to take it. Now that he had actually completed his dare, all his courage seemed to have suddenly disappeared, leaving him with a sense of dread pooling in the pit of his stomach.
“I, I-ah… Um…” Oh god, what had he done? Did he really just kiss Donghae? “I’m s-so sorry! I’ll leave now, please don’t hate me…” Bowing hastily, Hyukjae turned to leave, eyes frantically searching for Sungmin only to realize that he was nowhere in sight. Before he could even wonder why, however, a strong tug on his left hand pulled him back to reality.
“Don’t go.”
Hyukjae stared at Donghae, confusion evident in his face. “Wha-“ He was cut off abruptly by Donghae, who crushed both their lips together in a heated kiss. Hyukjae’s eyes widened, as he registered the feel of Donghae’s soft lips against his. He didn’t understand what was going on, why would Donghae kiss him voluntarily? All his thoughts flew out his mind when Donghae bit lightly on his bottom lip, eliciting a surprised squeak from him. Taking the opportunity to deepen the kiss, Donghae slid his tongue past Hyukjae’s parted lips, turning Hyukjae’s already flaming cheeks even redder. Hyukjae felt a tingle of excitement run through his veins and as the pleasure gradually took over, he started to respond to the kiss, trying to imitate what Donghae was doing with his tongue. He never thought that Donghae would taste this good and he didn’t know how long they stayed together like that, but just as he was about to run out of air, Donghae gave his bottom lip one last lick and broke the kiss.
Hyukjae gasped for air, vaguely aware that his left hand was still intertwined with Donghae’s right. He felt shy all of a sudden and busied himself with looking at everywhere but Donghae.
“Hyukkie.” Hyukjae’s head shot up in reflex, and he blushed again as he met Donghae’s brown orbs. He was smiling at him and oh, how Hyukjae wanted to stay in that moment forever. How can one person be so handsome like Donghae? Caught up in admiring his crush, he was completely unprepared for Donghae’s next words. “I know it was a dare.”
“I…” He had completely forgotten about the dare, and how did Donghae know about it anyway? He didn’t want Donghae to think that he had only wanted to kiss him because of the stupid dare. “It’s n-not like that… I mean, I did k-kiss you for the d-dare, but,” Hyukjae took a deep breath and plowed on, “I really like you.”
Hyukjae couldn’t believe he had finally said those words. There was no way to take them back now, and he hoped that he had not just worsened the situation. He watched Donghae carefully, and for a few seconds, his face remained impassive. Just as Hyukjae was about to give up hope and retract his previous statement, Donghae’s face split into a huge grin and he hugged Hyukjae tightly.
Perplexed, Hyukjae asked, “You don’t hate me?”
Donghae laughed and stole a peck from Hyukjae’s lips, earning another blush in return. “I like you too, Hyukkie. In fact, I was the one who asked Heechul hyung to dare you.”
THE END.
A/N: My friend said this was a good place to end... The original ending had Hyukkie all outraged at Hae who then pulled him into the council room to 'make up'. What do you think? My first time trying to write something that isn't crack... But somehow I think it still reads a bit like crack, not what I had in mind at all. Still, I wanted to get this out of my system... So here it is. Comment, please? (:
