Euro families

Serious discussion is serious. Please make it silly. :I

So, our beloved Europe is inhabited by these lovely families. The social!fail Germans, the amorous Latins, the troubled Slavs, the poor Balts, and the lonely Finno-Ugrians, to name some.

In Hetalia, the family relations never seem to go beyond nuclear families. But I'm fond of thinking that the nations do count common cultural and genetic origins and indeed consider each other as physical family, with some being closer and others more distant relatives. And then over that there's another layer of family relations because of later cultural influences: these are "adopted" family. Like, bringing up some smaller nation makes you his/her big bro/sis, even though you wouldn't have common cultural origins.

I also like to imagine all these families have their Papa or Mama, the original culture where the later nations develodep from. :) Like, Germania had big brother Scandinavia, and they were sons of Papa Germanic. I know this is way too scientific to be Hetatastic, but my archeology studies enslave my brain. ^~^'

Oh, and I'm sure Prussia is actually Germany's little brother. Because HRE = Germany (it's canon, deal with it) and the Teutonic Knights were formed of HRE's people. Then Gilbo outgrew Ludwig because that sissy Roderich sucked as a big bro and the cute little Lud totally fucking needed someone more awesome to make him a man and grown some chest hair. This is also the reason why Prussia has never bothered to tell Germany who he is. He's too fond of thinking of himself as the nii-san to let the truth out.

And then I have this piece of head canon about Hungary. As a nomad who moved into Central Europe from the Steppes, she knows very well she isn't related to any of her neighbours.
Now, this only became an issue in the 19th century, when everyone were being very important about their national uniqueness and romantic stuff like that. Back then the Hungarian scholars started to try to find any of Hungary's relatives. They hoped for something awesome - apparently they wished Hungarians would have been related to the Turkish people or some other badass nomads. But unfortunately, they found out that the Hungarians language is clearly related to ---- the Finnic languages. You know, to that bunch of moe hillbillies living with Russia. Not cool at all. So uncool infact that they tried their best to prove it was a lie. Only at some point was it accepted as a fact that Hungarians really are related to the Finnics, and nowadays it's a fact all participants celebrate via cultural interaction.
But I still chuckle every time I imagine Hungary trying to detect her family, and being so dismayed by how unawesome they were that she went into a denial about it, and only later learned to appreciate her unmanly but still loveable cousins. :P
