Pretty much most hotels in Edinburgh will be close to the main train station, Edinburgh Waverley. If you get a taxi to your hotel, if it's central it shouldn't cost more than a few pounds, or be walk-able. Note that edinburgh is quite hilly though!
With London, the cheapest way to get around is via the tube. If you're going to be there a few days, definitely get an Oyster Card as it's much much cheaper than buying paper tickets (about half the price, I believe). You should be able to go on the tube and/or the docklands light railway to around canary wharf and then a local bus or taxi. Try the journey planner on tfl.gov.uk.
Ah, that's good to hear! I actually regret posting this entry last night because my plans just changed to fly to Edinburgh first and visit London second. Still, your information is really helpful so thank you for that!
That's ok! I also recommend buying the train ticket between Edinburgh and London as soon as you've firmed up your plans- it gets progressively more expensive the more last minute you buy it. That being said, you can only buy a few months before you want to travel.
Now that you're flying into Edinburgh: There are buses which go from the airport to the city center, leaving every ten minutes. I think the fare is 3 or 4 pounds one way. For future reference, Edinburgh Waverley is Edinburgh's main train station, and the closest to the Royal Mile. The airport bus actually terminates at Waverley Bridge, directly across from the train station. Many hotels are walkable from there. If not, there's always loads of taxis around the train station.
The Tube is the easiest way to get around London, and the Piccadilly Line serves Heathrow Airport.
By any chance would you know which terminal the bus (that goes from the airport to the city center) stops outside? Does it have a luggage limit? I will look for hotels around Waverly Bridge. Thank you! :-)
In 2009 we stayed in the Jury Inn, between the Royal Mile and the Waverly train station on...Jeffrey(?) Street, right above the train station. It was *very* basic and not as spacious as the hotels I'm used to staying at in the US, but I didn't have any complaints at all and it was marvelously located for what my daughter and I wanted to do.
We took a pre-arranged taxi from the airport, and I thought the cost was quite reasonable (especially since both my daughter and I were so exhausted from the trip (US to Heathrow to Edinburgh) that we were brain-dead. (If we'd taken the bus, we'd have collapsed on it and just ridden around Edinburgh for 12 hours or so, until we recovered enough to come back to life! LOL)

LOL oh dear I can see that happening with me and my mum (especially since we are both rubbish at reading bus routes.) We'd probably end up in Ireland. Which is pretty hard considering there's a bunch of water in the way XD Did you call the taxi service from the airport right after you'd landed? Any recommendations?
