Just a note: It's Rothenburg, not Rothenberg you want, right? Because there is a Rothenberg as well, and also at least one Rotenburg that I know, so in case you enter things into navigation helps or train ticket vending machines, the spelling is rather important. ;-)

Where will you be staying? Only in Frankfurt, or could you stay in the Black Forest itself? Doing a tour of the Black Forest from Frankfurt isn't an obvious choice, really. Both are in different regions, and Frankfurt has its own mountain/forest regions that are closer to it. Pforzheim, which is a city in the Schwarzwald that's among the closest to Frankfurt, is two hours or more away by train in one direction. If you can stay somewhere other than Frankfurt, I'd really just plan one or two nights in a place that's right in the Black Forest and go walking on your own.

Yes I did mean Rothenurg =) Thank you!

I'm not particularly attached to Frankfurt and am totally open to all suggestions. Is there a particular place right in the Black Forest you would specifically recommend?

While Baden-Baden is lovely, I do not associate it with the black forest. It sits at the edge of the region and has a completely different athmosphere, being a spa town, than the typical black forest with its glass and wood-based economy.

Departing from Frankfurt am Main and combining the black forest with Srasbourg (again, lovely!) I can see why they don't venture further into the region. You won't have time.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of my favourites, although a bit crowded during tourist season.

I think if you want to go hiking, you'd need to stay for at least one night.

Black forest cake? *scrubs face* Okay. Pretty much available throughout Germany, so shouldn't be a problem :)

I like Bad Säckingen, Altensteig, Calw, Feldberg...
