maybe we care because people going out of their way to do little rituals that they don't believe in has implications for:

a) belief in god
b) belief in freedom of will
c) the social psyc phenom of people honestly reporting the reasons they do things, and being WRONG. wrong, wrong wrong.
d) beliefs in general
e) rituals in general

? maybe?
