Did I annoy any of you lovely people with owls? Please accept my apologies. I haven't been functioning correctly all week. I've been making things for other people and being on chat fourteen hours a day. I also haven't been eating properly; it's almost become a sort of afterthought. If only I could do this during the school year ( Read more... )

I had to laugh reading your post as I can sort of relate. I was adopted from India at ten weeks, and so know absolutely nothing about the place except that it's gorgeous and I want to visit someday. However, as I've gotten older, more and more people from there have come up to me, assuming that I am familiar with the language/culture whatever, and then are completely nonplussed when I'm like, duh... like I'm some sort of idiot.

As for feeling hyper about your appearance, I think that's only natural; being surrounded by a dominant Anglo-Saxon culture will make a person very aware of how they look if its remotely different from the mainstream. It's weird for me in that I'm not constantly aware of the differences; it tends to pop up on me in very weird circumstances.

Meh. Go live in China for a year in college. That's what I'll probably do. Although that will underline all sorts of other differences. Der.

understand where you are coming from. I am a Philippina with some Chinese thrown in for good measure. I can only understand Tagalog if it is spoken to me, but I can't make one coherent sentence unless it is a bad word like motherfucker etc. I was only three when I left ( ... )

I wanted to say also that whenever I see an asian person in a crowd or on tv/movies, I always stare really hard. And yeah, I feel very
unPhilippino and at the same time unAmerican. My husband who is also Pinoy, is just like me in that regard. We eat white rice and have a vague toehold in that culture/country.

You should eat! That's not good for you! [/end channelling my mother]

And I think that the identification with a culture while at the same time not being part of it is something a lot of people go through. I don't come from an Irish speaking area of Ireland, so I had to work hard to learn my native language, like most Irish people. Even now, I'm not fully fluent. Native speakers and foreigners have a tendency to be disbelieving and/or condescending to people whose first language is English; it's inferior in the constitution as well ( ... )

I was away camping for awhile so sorry it took me so long to get back to you. :) Wallpaper would be easy to do - do you want any changes done besides putting the image at your screen resolution? What resolution are you using?
